mobile carvnival association queen Eugenia greer o’connor

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Francis O’Connor III, Queen Eugenia O’Connor is Mobile Carnival Association’s Queen for 2022, but she’s had some practice reigning over Mardi Gras. In 2014, she was crowned Juvenile Queen and rode in the Floral Parade. This year, she will be sharing a float with King Felix III and hosting the Queen’s Luncheon.
Eugenia is enthusiastic about the return of Carnival to our fair city. “I am happy that Mardi Gras is returning for this community,” she claims, adding, “Mobile is a city that thrives on all that Mardi Gras has to offer— from the togetherness that it fosters to the energy it creates, from the jobs it supports to the culture it embraces— the list could go on and on. We need community and connectedness more than ever in this world we are living in, and Mardi Gras is the perfect way to do so. Mardi Gras brings Mobile to life!”

Her Majesty’s family has a longstanding connection to Mobile Carnival Association (MCA) royalty going all the way back to 1912, when Eugenia’s great-great-grandmother Lucy Shields Leatherbury was Queen. Her great-grandfather, Clifton Clarke Inge Sr., was named King Felix III in 1930, followed by her grandfather, Clifton Clarke Inge Jr., being crowned King Felix III in 1961 and her grandmother, Eugenia (Genie) Radcliff Inge, serving as First Lady-In-Waiting in 1962. In 1963, her aunt, Lucy Radcliff Lyons Harrison, was Queen. Which leads us to her mother, Ashley Inge O’Connor, reigning as Queen in 1990, and her first cousin Clifton Clarke Inge III was also Juvenile King in 2013.

A senior at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, Queen Eugenia is savoring her last semester in college and looks forward to moving to Atlanta for a management consulting job after graduating. But right now, her focus is squarely on ensuring a successful and joyous return to the Mardi Gras season for both MCA and Mobilians alike.

strikers lady katherine christian ladd

Lady Katherine “Katie” Ladd is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Hunter Ladd Sr. and is a senior at The University of Alabama, graduating in the spring with a degree in history and real estate. Katie will serve as First Lady in Waiting for the 2022 MCA Mardi Gras Court and the Leading Lady for the 179th anniversary of the Strikers. Katie is thrilled to be making her debut this season, as she comes from a long line of family members who have served in various Court roles through the years. Katie’s father served as her mother’s Knight during her Court year, her uncle Patrick ruled as MCA King, grandfather Russell Ladd and his brother Edward Ladd were Knights. In addition, her first cousins, Sadie and Millie McAleer, ruled as Juvenile Queens. Millie, as well as her sister, Sara McAleer, served as First Ladies in Waiting. Katie recalls an important phone call back in October 2021 that served as the defining moment of her journey to Leading Lady. “My dad went to the Strikers meeting and had my Uncle Patrick, my grandfather (Russell Ladd, ‘Pop’), and a slew of other Ladd family members call me, informing me that my dad was asked to be captain of the ball and that I was going to be the Leading Lady,” she beams. “I was thrilled and could not stop smiling after hearing and feeling my dad’s excitement through the phone.”

For her special night, Katie will don gold, from the pins in her hair to the crystal embellishments on her shoes. She will wear a Mac Duggal gold midi dress with matching hairpins embellished with leaves, pearls, and crystals. For shoes, Katie chose gold heels adorned with black and gold crystals. And to complete her ensemble, she will wear a gold necklace and diamond earrings borrowed from her grandmother’s collection. “Any pieces of jewelry my grandmother loans are sentimen- tal,” Katie says. “She has an amazing collection and is adamant about sharing among her five granddaugh- ters. Every piece has an amazing storybehind it.”

Katie feels honored to have been chosen as this year’s Leading Lady to serve alongside the 2021 Leading Lady, who just so happens to be her cousin, Caroline Ladd. “Having two Leading Ladies makes the night twice as fun and sentimental,” Katie shares. “Having cousins, my dad and Patrick, as both captains of the ball and cousins as leading ladies will be an unforgettable time. Caroline and I have many similarities; we’re both Kappas at Alabama, both First Ladies in Waiting, and both leading the Strikers. In the future, I’m looking forward to seeing our pictures hanging on the wall in the Strikers’ den next to the Carnival Museum.”

To reflect both of the Strikers Leading Ladies, the ball invitations were specifically designed to represent both Katie and Caroline. When Katie’s father was chosen as captain, he was gifted a painting of the Strikers’ mascot, the goat, by artist Sarah Otts. Previously, when Caroline’s father was chosen as captain in 2021 he was also gifted with a goat painting by Sarah Otts. Though the goats are different, they are also very similar. The invitations feature both versions of the goats—each on opposite flaps of the paper.

Coming from a large family, Katie adores all of the Mardi Gras memories she’s made through the years—usually centered around time spent with her siblings and cousins at her Great Uncle Bill’s house on Monroe Street near the Civic Center. “Spending time at their house, which is adorned with pictures of family and knick knacks, is a fun place to gather and take breaks between parades. My cousins and I would exchange beads, moon pies, and other throws on the front porch,” recalls Katie. “Today, I love looking back at photos of my cousins and me sitting on our dads’ shoulders at parades. The expressions on our faces are priceless. Some of us are crying, some are smiling, and others are motionless and dumbfounded.”

Upon graduating in May, Katie has her sights set on moving to a big city with plans to pursue a career in historic preservation and marketing, telling us, “It’s important to me that I experience a larger city, make connections, and find new friends to understand many different walks of life. Ultimately, I plan to come back to Mobile. It’s a special city and a great place to live!”

domino ball lady adelaide elizabeth bell

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice David Bell III, Lady Adelaide Bell has been selected as the Leading Lady for the Athelstan Club’s 148th Anniversary Ball. The Athelstan Club has been a part of Adelaide’s life since she was a child, having watched countless Mardi Gras parades from their stands and brunched there during many holidays with her grandparents. “My grandfather ate lunch there every day while he was alive and was a member for 64 years, “she fondly recalls. “There is even a picture of him on the wall in the bar area that we love getting to see when we go down there now.”

Adelaide is no stranger to the courts of Mardi Gras as she was a member of the 2014 Juvenile Court. In addition, her older sisters, Catherine Bell Trent, and Jacqueline Bell Hollingsworth both participated in the MCA Court. And, her younger brother, David, was a page in 2010 and in the Juvenile Court in 2016.

Being selected as the Leading Lady for the Domino Ball did not come as a complete surprise to Adelaide. In fact, she knew pretty early on that her parents had been asked if Adelaide would do the honors of leading the ball. “My mom told me they were giving a cocktail party for the Athelstan Club Board of Gover- nors, and that I needed to be there to meet them all,” Adelaide recalls. “She told me that they did not have a scroll party like the other organizations were having for the other Leading Ladies. Therefore, it was such a great surprise when the marshals processed in carrying torches and asked me to lead the ball. I will never forget that moment when I realized it was actually a scroll party for me. It turned out to be such a special night.” The Domino Ball is special in the fact that Adelaide and the other ladies of the court dress up in costumes that represent their suppressed desires. Adelaide’s costume must remain a surprise until the night of the Domino Ball, thus we have to keep our mouth closed on this one. We can however share that Homer McClure has been trusted to bring Adelaide’s vision to life—he will no doubt ace the design. Adelaide attends Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia where she studies Cognitive Behavioral Science and Spanish. She is a member of the Delta Society, a local sorority on campus. She is on the leadership team for the Cognitive and Behavioral Science Club. She is the International Projects Co-Chair for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Club. She is also a member of the Generals’ Activities Board, Club Tennis, the Red Cross Club, and participated as a delegate for the state of Maine in W&L’s 2020 Mock Convention.

Upon graduating in May 2022, Adelaide hopes to spend a year in Spain teaching English. After the year is up, she will attend graduate school to earn her Doctor of Psychology degree and become a clinical psychologist. “After graduate school, I hope to open my own clinic where I can see patients. My goal is to be a bilingual clinical psychologist so I can see both English and Spanish-speaking patients.”

order of myths lady jean allen hope

The Order of Myths (OOM), Mobile’s oldest mystic society, has asked Miss Jean Allen Hope (she goes by “Jeanie”) to once again serve as their Leading Lady for their 154th anniversary. After last year’s Mardi Gras was shuttered by the pandemic, Mardi Gras is back and no one is happier than Jeanie, who thought her chance to lead might have passed. Instead, she recalls, “We were having ‘Sunday Funday’ on our wharf with my family and cousins and my mom started popping champagne while my dad asked if I would lead.” The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Milton Hope Jr., Jeanie’s family roots run deep in OOM. “Both my grand- fathers, uncles, father, and my cousins are all OOM members, and I feel honored they chose me to lead it. It makes it even more special that my mom, Mary Shannon Hope, was the OOM Leading Lady in 1987, when she served as a Lady on the Mobile Carnival Association (MCA) Court,” Jeanie tells us.

For the renowned OOM Sunday Party, Jeanie says her gown “is a little sassy like me,” smiling as she speaks. “I bought my dress at Debra’s Boutique, where they were very helpful in fulfilling my vision. I wanted it to be fun, yet elegant, and I think we achieved both. Christal Hall added special touches to make it fit and look just right.” Jeanie is quick to acknowledge she will be wearing her grandmother’s jewelry, noting, “She inspired my love of jewelry with her taste for classic, elegant, and memorable pieces.”

“We have always enjoyed Mardi Gras as a family. It’s one of our favorite times of the year because it allows all of us and our friends to be together—watching the parades, staying at The Battle House Hotel, and having a good time,” she shares. Having done so her entire life, Jeanie now has a new grati- tude for the season. As she eloquently explains, “Last year was just not the same without it. Of course, I’ve always loved this time of year, but a year without Mardi Gras gave me a deeper appreciation for Carnival and everything it means to the people of Mobile and to me. It’s more than parades and balls—it’s everyone coming together as a community to celebrate our unique culture.”

A graduate of The University of Alabama, Jeanie was a Kappa Kappa Gamma and she looks back on her years there with fondness, saying, “My experience at Alabama was amazing. I made friends and memories I will never forget. In the summer of my junior year, I was able to study abroad in Innsbruck, Austria. It was the best decision I’ve ever made and I highly encourage it.”

Her degree in marketing is being put to good use in her job as Marketing Manager at Gulf Distributing Co. of Mobile, with Jeanie declaring, “It’s the perfect job for me and I really enjoy it!”

knights of revelry lady marjorie ann grace singleton

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Singleton, Lady Ann Grace has the honor to serve as the 148th Knights of Revelry Leading Lady for the 2022 Mardi Gras season. Ann Grace is overjoyed to be involved in all of the frivolity of this year’s season and especially being involved in the celebrations of an organization that has meant so much to her throughout her life. “From the barn parties to the many Fat Tuesdays over the years,KOR have been such a joy in my family’s life. Sporting blue and silver every Mardi Gras season is a given for me,” she shares. “I think is the most fun thing is that they actually ride in the daytime parade on Fat Tuesday and have a blast while doing it! These men not only love everything that Mardi Gras is about, but they know how to bring people together. I’m grateful to have been chosen as their leading lady and I hope to lead as well as KOR does!”

the beautiful blue and silver decorat- ed doors and saw my sweet mother smiling at me,” recalls Ann Grace. “I saw the excitement in her eyes and I could not wait to find out what was about to happen!” Just then, the Excelsior Band started their tunes and Ann Grace was met at the doors by Folly. “He walked me to the front of the room, knelt down, presented me with a rose on a silver tray with KOR engraved on it, and asked me to be the 148th Leading Lady for the Knights of Revelry. I said ‘Of course!’ and could not wait for the upcoming season! The thrilling afternoon was followed by a great celebration with friends and family.”

KOR celebrations begin well before the Mardi Gras season with their Christmas Revel in December. The Revel is a can’t-miss event at the Battle House Hotel which marks the start of the upcoming Mardi Gras season. This Revel is where AnnAnn Grace’s Leading Lady journey began in July of last year when her family received an invitation inviting them to a “family gathering” at the new KOR den on Broad Street. “I was so excited to see all of our special friends and celebrate in the new den! When my sister Layne and I arrived, she started running into the den. Wondering why, I peered into Grace made her first public appearance as Leading Lady. Hearing from her mother that the Revel is one of the best parties, Ann Grace and her mother set off to design the perfect gown for the occasion. She explains, “We wanted to design something that would capture my personality while staying true to what KOR is all about! Therefore, we chose to design a three-tiered white pleated organza gown with a pleated collar detail. It was so much fun to dream up with designer Judy Ann Cleveland, and even more fun to wear.”

Further into the season, Ann Grace will celebrate with KOR all through the day on Fat Tuesday, kicking it off with an exhilarating ride through downtown Mobile on the KOR Leading Lady float. Ann Grace adds, “I am thrilled about having the opportunity to ride on the Leading Lady float on Fat Tuesday! Being Leading Lady of the Knights of Revelry is not only for a Mardi Gras season but an honor that lasts a lifetime.”

When it comes to Ann Grace, she says there are three things to know about her: “I always love a walk with friends, cheering on the Tide, and a trip to the beach!” In her free time, you can find Ann Grace doing some- thing creative, whether it’s designing something or creating a piece of art. A student at The University of Alabama, where she studies advertis- ing and communication studies, Ann Grace comes with an impressive list of academic and personal achieve- ments. She is a member of the of The Oakley Society, Capstone Advertising Federation, The National Honor Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society. Her accomplishments include being named to the President’s List throughout her college career. Ann Grace served as the Vice President of Public Relation and the House Manager for Kappa Delta sorority. She was awarded the Stella Welborn Wright Scholarship and The Betty Heard Memorial Scholarship. Lastly, she received the College of Communication and Information Sciences Academic Achievement Award. And recently, she was the recipient of the Bruce Roche Alabama Advertising Education Foundation Scholarship. We’re impressed, to say the least!

After graduation, Ann Grace hopes to find a career that serves as a true representation of her love for anything creative and all things color!

knights of revelry lady hannah elise collier

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bentley Moore Collier, Lady Hannah Elise Collier was originally selected as the 147th Leading Lady of the Knights of Revelry for the 2021 Mardi Gras season. Though the pandemic quickly shut down the frivolity of the season, Hannah is grateful to have been asked to return as the Co-Leading Lady for this year’s KOR ball alongside her good friend, Ann Grace Singleton. Though the shutdown dealt a blow to a majority of the fun last year, Hannah and the ladies of the court were still able to celebrate the season through December. She says, “My favorite memory of the season last year was our last sponsored party, honoring Queen Laura! It was one of our last big parties before we all went back to school, and I remember all of us having such a fun time and making the most of it!”

Having not been able to celebrate much as the KOR Leading Lady last year, Hannah was grateful to have been asked to reprise her role along- side Ann Grace this year. During the KOR Christmas Revel, their fathers presented both Hannah and Ann Grace as Folly and the marshals presented them with their scrolls and goblets. “Afterward, we shared a dance with our fathers and danced around with Folly as Ann Grace and I beat bladders around the dance floor” recalls Hannah. “It was such an amazing moment to be able to share with her as she’s like my little sister; our parents have been close friends before either of us were born. I’ll definitely remember that night for the rest of my life!” In addition, Hannah is looking forward to riding alongside Ann Grace on the Leading Lady float during the KOR parade on Fat Tuesday!

Santa Claus society and infant mystics lady lucy boeer stuardi

Lady Lucy Boeer Stuardi is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aloysius Edwin Stuardi III and has been selected asthe Leading Lady for both the Santa Claus Society’s 135th Anniversary Ball and the Infant Mystics’ 154th Anniversary Ball, honors she doesn’t take for granted. Lucy descends from an impressive Mardi Gras lineage— her father was a Herald in the MCA Court in 1976 and a Knight in the MCA Juvenile Court in 1982. Lucy’s brother Dru was also a Herald in the MCA Court in 2006, a Knight in the MCA Juvenile Court in 2012, and a Knight in the MCA Court in 2020. In addition, her grandmother, Ann Louise Roberts Stuardi, was a Lady in Waiting in the 1963 MCA Court. Lucy recalls the moments she was first asked to serve as Leading Lady of both balls, citing the experiences as incredible and something she will remember for a lifetime. It was during a gathering at her family’s Fowl River house when Lucy was first asked to be the IM’s Leading Lady. Although it appeared to be a routine family and friend party on the river, Lucy was surprised when the leader of the IMs asked her if she would be willing to serve as the Leading Lady for the Infant Mystics 154th Anniversary Ball. “I immediately said ‘yes’ and the party turned into a Mardi Gras party,” Lucy excitedly recalls. For the Santa Claus Society, Lucy was home visiting her parents in the fall. It was during a dinner when her father informed Lucy he had been visited by the Head Santa who instructed Lucy’s father to ask her if she would serve as their Leading Lady for their 135th Anniversary Ball. “I was momentarily speechless, but quickly said ‘yes’ as well!” says Lucy.

Since she will be leading two balls, Lucy has selected two gorgeous gowns for both occasions. For her SCS dress, whose ball was held this past December, Lucy donned a strap- less John Paul Ataker silk faille dress from Debra’s. This dress featured a fit to flare skirt and a multi-layer peplum at the waist, accentuated with a crystal beaded belt by jewelry designer Sara Gabriel.

For the Infant Mystics’ ball, Lucy will wear a V-neck fit to flare silk faille gown with an organza overskirt and an organza ruffle on one shoulder from Bella Bridesmaids and embel- lished by Christal Hall. Lucy is quick to point out what makes the gown even more special,

saying, “We incorporated a piece of fabric from my late grandmother’s dress when she served as the IM’s Leading Lady in 1963.”

Mardi Gras has been a large part of Lucy’s upbringing; she attended her first parade at a mere 10 months old and hasn’t missed a Mardi Gras weekend since. Her favorite childhood memory comes from her grandmother, who smocked Mardi Gras-themed dresses for Lucy and all of her cousins to wear to the IMs float loading party every year. “Growing up, Mardi Gras weekend was always my favorite . We would watch the parades from Bienville Square, go to crawfish boils, enjoy the Saturday float loading party, and of course more parades,” recalls Lucy. “Although this year was the first time I attended the Santa Claus Society Ball, I loved hearing stories from my aunts, uncles, and cousins about how much fun the ball was for them. This year did not disappoint—it was spectacular!”

Currently a senior at The University of Alabama, where she majors in marketing and minors in sales, Lucy has been on the Dean’s List every year, is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and serves on the philanthropy committee. Upon graduation in May, Lucy plans to work in a marketing firm.

order of the infant mystics lady cecilia ann d’olive

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter D’Olive, Lady Cecilia Ann D’Olive was originally selected as the 2021 Leading Lady of the 153rd Anniversary Ball of the Order of the Infant Mystics, and will reprise her role for the 2022 Mardi Gras season alongside one of her best friends, Lucy Stuardi. “If you know my family and me at all, you know I was pumped to be asked to co-lead! Lucy and her family are lifelong best friends of mine and my family’s. I thought it was very special to have Sarah Gaillard, another lifelong family friend, pass down the title of Leading Lady to me. Now, I can’t believe I get to not just pass down the title to another best friend, but share it with one!” she exclaims.

Thankfully, Celia’s original reign as Leading Lady wasn’t completely canceled during the pandemic last year, as she was still able to throw the biggest and best scroll party last December. “I had extended family on both sides of the family in town, which was very special for me,” Celia shares. “I also had nine friends who attended SMU with me come to town, and we stayed in the Battle House Hotel together all weekend. They came from all over the country—Texas, California, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina, and Connecticut!:

Keeping the same theme for the ball as last year, Celia plans to wear her original gown, embellished by Homer McClure. Lucy and Celia will be presented at the ball together. Mike Rogers will escort Celia and Tom Gaillard will escort Lucy. “Talk about a squad,” jokes Celia. “I’m so excited to finally represent my father and grandfather in front of the IMs organization at the ball.”

order of dragons lady kit d’olive

Lady Kit D’Olive is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter D’Olive and is honored to be selected as the Leading Lady for the Order of Dragons’ 134th Anniversary Ball for the 2022 Mardi Gras season. Kit is thrilled to have been chosen to represent an organization that has meant so much to her family for many generations, including her great grandfather, grandfather, and her own father. What makes this season even more special is that she gets to share in the excitement with her sister, Celia, who will serve as the Co-Leading Lady of the IMs this year, making it a true family affair!

Kit’s Mardi Gras lineage also dates back generations, beginning when her grandmother, Kit Geil, served as First Lady in Waiting for the MCA Court. Her uncle, Joe Geil, reigned as the Juvenile King while her little sister, Anna Grace, is currently a member of the 2022 Juvenile Court. Her older sister, Celia, is a member of the 2021 MCA Court and is serving as the Co-Leading Lady for the IMs this year.

Tommy Gleason and his family, who also feel like family to Kit, first asked Kit to be Leading Lady over dinner at the home of Kit’s aunt and uncle. Without a moment’s hesitation, Kit emphatically agreed and the festivities and preparation began! When it came to designing her gown for the ball, Kit enlisted the help of close friends Annabelle Doyle and Laurel Revers. Annabelle chose the style of the dress for Kit while Laurel, who is a fashion major, sketched a design for Kit to use. “They both have amazing style, so I knew I wanted to reach out to them,” Kit tells us. Janice Roberts brought Laurel’s sketch to life, making it simple, elegant, anddesigned entirely by Kit and her friends. Her look will be completed by pearl earrings and flowers in her hair, which will be styled by Adelaide McAleer.

Kit attended The University of Alabama, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Now working at Five Gold Monkeys in Mobile, it’s possible she’s found her calling, as she tells us, “I absolutely love it there! Since I’ve started, it’s really sparked an interest in interior design and I would love to continue following that path!”

order of dragons lady ann bradley long

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Forrest Long, Lady Ann Bradley Long will be sharing in the frivolity of the Order of Dragons’ 134th anniversary ball alongside 2022 Leading Lady, Kit D’Olive. Ann Bradley originally made her debut during the 2021 season, which was ultimately cut short due to the pandemic. “We were fortunate to be able to participate in the Camellia Ball and all of the festivities during Christmas time, but missed those surrounding Mardi Gras week,” recalls Ann Bradley. Though she was originally saddened by the loss of the 2021 season, Ann Bradley is thrilled to be co-leading alongside Kit for the 2022 season, saying, “I have known the D’Olives for a long time. Kit is such a fun and sweet girl; I’m excited to share this night with her!” Ann Bradley plans to wear the Leading Lady gown and Mardi Gras week wardrobe she originally planned for the 2021 season.
