Lady in Waiting Frances Campbell Ladd
– Order of Myths & Strikers Society –
Frances Campbell Ladd, affectionately known as Campbell, is thrilled to serve as Lady in Waiting for this year’s MCA Court. Born in Atlanta, GA, but a resident of Mobile since toddlerhood, Campbell brings a rich family history steeped in the traditions of Mobile Mardi Gras, dating back to the early 1900s.
The Ladd family legacy is one of enduring commitment to the traditions of Mobile Carnival. Campbell’s father, E. Bradford Ladd Jr., served as a King’s Equerry in 1976 and later became a Knight in the 1990 Mardi Gras celebration. The family’s involvement spans generations, with Campbell’s sister Sarah and brother Edward participating in the Juvenile Court in 2021 and as the Juvenile King in 2018. Campbell herself served in the Juvenile Court of 2016.
Growing up amidst the colorful floats and festive spirit, Campbell shares, “From frequenting the float barn to carrying float signs, I have definitely been hands-on and have loved every minute of it.” The Ladd family’s close-knit bond and active participation in Mardi Gras have created cherished memories for Campbell, who looks forward to adding new chapters to this tradition. “I have seen so many events from behind the scenes and have been eagerly anticipating the day I can be an active participant.”
A graduate of UMS-Wright Preparatory School, Campbell now pursues her education at the University of Virginia, graduating in May 2024. She has proven herself as a candidate for Distinction within her major and is a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Delta Honor Society. She is currently working tirelessly on her thesis through the distinguished program.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Campbell has actively engaged in campus life, serving as the current President and former Risk Management Chair of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Her internship with Jerry Carl in Washington, D.C., and an upcoming internship with Grisham and Barnhardt, PLLC, in Charlottesville, VA., reflect her interest in law, a path she is exploring further. Campbell plans to apply to law school in the fall of 2024. Outside of school, Lady Campbell works for Naborforce in Charlottesville, VA, assisting those who may find some daily tasks challenging.
The Bay Area holds a special place in Campbell’s heart, especially Point Clear, where she loves being close to the water and going on boat rides. “Growing up in the Ladd bay house was so special,” she recalls. “All of my cousins, great aunt, uncle, and grandparents spent every summer there together. We would visit the Grand Hotel teatime and spend hours tubing on the bay.”
For Campbell, Mobile is more than a city; it’s a community filled with the best people on earth. “It is a larger city but feels so small. We are loyal and look out for one another. This is the best place to grow up; my friends are friends are friends for a lifetime,” she fondly shares. “Mardi Gras has only cemented our friendships as we navigate the next stage of our lives. No matter where my career takes me, Mobile will always be a treasured home.”
Campbell’s personal style is a mix of comfort and glamour, from sweatshirts and leggings to fun dresses for special occasions. As she steps into her role as Lady in Waiting, Campbell’s Mardi Gras wardrobe, curated with the help of family friend Homer McClure, exudes elegance. Collaborating with her mother and the talented team at Debra’s, Campbell’s ensemble is a testament to tradition and modern sophistication.
Garland Sanders has also played a helpful role in bringing Campbell’s wardrobe to life, helping piece it all together with grace and humor. With Homer McClure’s creative touch, the gracious support and the keen eye of the Debra’s team, and Garland’s honed skills, Campbell is ready to grace the Mardi Gras festivities in style.
