IN-FLIGHT FASHION With Columnist Charlotte Kilborn Carey
Those of you who know me, know that I’m pretty well-traveled and that I also like to travel well. I’ve learned a lot about what clothing works best and have become a pretty savvy packer. With lots of travel opportunities coming up in the next couple of months, I’m thinking hard about my winter travel capsule and mentally curating my outfits to maximize choices and minimize suitcase space. My color picks for ease are a neutral palate of white, black, ivory and dark brown. It’s basically Cameron Diaz’s character Amanda’s wardrobe from the movie The Holiday. All of these shades pull together effortlessly and you’ll find that they make pairing jewelry and shoes a breeze. You don’t need to dress up to travel but you can still look polished, be comfortable and exude the look of quiet luxury.
Your day of travel outfit should be part of your curated capsule for even more efficiency. Now I could get started on passengers in pajamas and flip-flops but even they need to think of the big picture when it comes to unexpected travel day hiccups. You may have to sprint from terminal A to terminal F and loose fitting sandals aren’t going to cut it. Closed toe shoes that slip on such as a loafer or a stylish sneaker are a much better choice. If you want to wear a cute boot, make sure it’s one without a metal shank or you’ll set off the TSA alarm. Dark long pants with some stretch and tops made from natural materials are your best friend in the event a little turbulence lands your beverage in your lap. I always travel with a big scarf to double as a blanket as well as hand sanitizer and hydrating lip balm and face mist to thwart moisture zapping air travel. Here are a few choice pieces to take you around the globe in style. Maybe throw in a great pink lipstick to show off your confidant smile, too. Travel safely!
