COMFORT & JOY

A reprieve from the busy condominiums and tourism chaos, many locals dream of having a vacation home on the Gulf Coast’s exclusive Ono Island. Only 5.5-miles long, this private guarded and gated community boasts some of the area’s most beautiful homes. And real estate opportunities are limited to say the least. When longtime clients and friends of interior designer Cindy Meador landed a pristine spot on this coveted land, the planning began and the dream of building a perfect spot for year round family gatherings became a reality.

Understanding that when working with a client and a team of professionals to build a home from the ground up for a dream client, the importance of good relationships can’t be emphasized enough. With her boundless energy, positive can-do attitude, and the range of skills and talent it takes to drive a project of this magnitude, Cindy was thrilled to jump on board for this Ono Island retreat. “This was a new build and our 3rd project with this client. Hired in the planning and development stages, I was involved in every aspect from the ground up which truly is the best time to bring in an interior designer. With the ability to see how a home should function, it definitely prevents costly mistakes,” she shares.

With visions of family togetherness, the homeowners wanted a vacation home very different from their primary residence. “Their main home is very traditional and they wanted a different feel for their vacation home. Their ultimate goal was to build a home where they could spend a lot of their time as well as pop-in visits with their children and their families. Wanting a modern feel, they choose an interesting color palette of black and white mixed with warm colors like persimmons, greens, and mustards that are super easy to maintain and able to endure all the family wear and tear!” Cindy explains.

Getting more specific, Cindy adds, “While this home boasts high-end design, we added both a comfortable and casual aesthetic through the fabric and color selections. The streamlined look of the contemporary furnishings intermingle with the warmth and “come hither” upholstery pieces we selected. So while the home looks designed, it’s also very personable as we carefully collected and curated every item. From the chairs that swivel to the performance fabrics and rugs that tolerate wet and sandy foot traffic, everything is functionable and family friendly, too.”

As for her favorite aspects of this home? “I love the openness the two story living room offers. It allowed us to create an incredible statement wall that greets guests to the left upon entry. The custom wallpaper stabilizes the large space and defines the aesthetic for the entire home. Then, when guests look to the right, they see the incredible glass rails in the upper loft area that leads them to explore further. While it looks grand, it actually allows the family to stay connected at all times. The comfortable mid-century modern furnishings and unique light fixtures throughout the home also add a lot of style which means no need for clutter and more room for family gatherings, too.”

Naturally, the stunning stone and tile selection in this home stand out as well. With bedrooms and bathrooms for all, CIndy created statements to ensure each space has a unique look. From the floor to ceiling wall of black marble in the master bath to the chic rich green tile in the loft area bar, Cindy quite literally left no stone unturned.

With incredible water views, Cindy maximized the concept of indoor meets outdoor living with tall inviting walls of glass doors. Opening the entire back of the home, these doors make going from the kitchen and living room to the pool and pier super simple. Inbetween, the family can enjoy comfortable covered areas for football game viewing as well as cookouts and dining alfresco. Making it both a kid and adult paradise, Cindy’s ability to capture the contemporary yet coastal vibe we all crave is undeniable.

And when it comes to contemporary design, Cindy advises bravery. “If the client can just put their trust in the designer, the results can be phenomenal!” Knowing Cindy is well versed in the vital aspects of interior design like quality  control across the supply chain, bringing down costs, meeting client expectations, and finding the right vendors and suppliers, we’re curious about the challenges of this project. “Actually, there weren’t any significant challenges on this project. Chad Loper of Loper Construction and Ashley Holt, Chad’s right hand, made the project go so smoothly and seamless! Due to the fact that the client had so much experience with this team in the past, trust had already been established. And the clients were in awe at the final reveal!”

As for her clients take? “My family and I are absolutely thrilled with the results. I wanted this home to feel like a resort and it does. Sometimes people actually think it is a resort – including our grandchildren! Having done several other homes for various family members, Cindy has proven to be incredibly versatile and truly deserves high praises for this home. I’ve interviewed other designers who seem to be locked into a particular look, but Cindy isn’t. She can truly do anything!” Faye Boring concludes.
