Vivian Davis Figures

Vivian Davis Figures, a prominent figure in Alabama politics, embodies beauty in all its forms. As an Alabama State Senator, she has dedicated her life to serving the people of District 33 and making a positive impact on their lives. Her journey has been one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her community.

Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Vivian Figures has deep roots in her hometown. After being the widow of the late Senator Michael A. Figures for 26 years, she married Troy Gandy on Valentine’s Day. She cherishes her family dearly, and her immediate family members, including her sons Jelani, Shomari, Akil, and Derrick, as well as her grandchildren A'Kayle, Micah, Jai, Iniko, and Novah, have been a source of strength and inspiration throughout her life.

Vivian's list of accomplishments is as diverse as her roles. As an Alabama State Senator, she has been at the forefront of legislative initiatives, advocating for equitable funding in education, women's rights, clean air in public spaces, and protecting children from the dangers of vaping devices. Her passion for helping people extends beyond politics, as she serves as a Licensed Insurance/Financial Services Agent, a Mary Kay Consultant, and the owner of Figures Mediation Services and Vivi's Sweets & Treats. “Through my businesses, I get to teach financial literacy and help people create a plan for sustainable financial stability and wealth, mediate and find common ground between parties, and help people become business owners,” she says. “All of these things bring great joy to me.”

While Vivian excels in her various roles, she wishes more people understood the complexity of her work. There is often more to a story than what can be conveyed in a news article or during a newscast. “There is background information and details that are not told in that story because it’s just not enough time,” she admits. She strives to be a spiritually-led elected official, bringing compassion and understanding to her decision-making process.

Her education and career are marked by remarkable highlights and achievements. Vivian Figures has been a catalyst for change, leading efforts to ban smoking in the Alabama State House and amending the dress code to allow women to wear slacks in the Senate Chamber. She authored the Alabama Clean Indoor Air Act and expanded the Amber Alert by enacting the Hiawayi Robinson Missing Child Alert System. “I would say that I am very humbled to be a vessel that God has used to achieve many things,” Vivian tells us. “It is so gratifying to help others in need. I literally want everyone to have all of the things they need to have a fulfilling life. I believe in passing on your blessings to others.”

Outside of her professional endeavors, Vivian finds joy in the beauty of nature and the tranquility of the water. She appreciates the Bay area for its serenity and the opportunity it provides for her to unwind. But her greatest joy lies in her kitchen, where she spends countless hours baking and cooking. “I’m told that people become addicted to my Cocoa Fudge Candy and Key Lime Cake,” she laughs.

Those who know Vivian best describe her as a spiritual, honest, and giving person. Her love for the Lord, her family, and all people is evident in her actions. She is a devoted mother, a pillar of the community, and a steadfast advocate for the youth. One of her friends describe her as, “I would best describe her as a person who is a true Steel Magnolia. Southern, beautiful inside and out, tough and strong. Like a magnolia, she has the stature to share her vision as well as the ability and desire to protect her people. She blossoms with beautiful flowers that manifest as kindness and caring. People are immensely attracted to her seeking strength, popularity and beauty by association. There are many magnolias, but only one Vivi.” Vivian Figures is highly regarded in the Alabama Senate for her intentional bipartisan approach, striving for the betterment of her state.

Amid her numerous accomplishments, Vivian remains grounded and values the importance of laughter, fun, singing, and dancing. She finds solace in the wisdom imparted by her mother, who taught her to treat others as she wishes to be treated, understanding that kindness and compassion have a way of coming back to us.

Looking forward, Vivian is excited about expanding her Insurance/Financial Services business to educate her community about finances and help them build generational wealth. She also plans to market her signature recipe, the Trillion $ Pound Cake, and further develop the Michael Figures Leadership Experience in collaboration with The University of Alabama and Stillman College through the Figures Legacy Education Foundation, Inc.

Bob & Elizabeth Pamela Smith Zellner

Born in Jay, Florida, Bob Zellner’s childhood was characterized by frequent moves due to his father’s role as a Methodist minister. However, Daphne holds a special place in his heart as the closest thing to a hometown. “I’ve been on the Gulf Coast since the early 1940s,” recalls Bob. “Daddy was gifted a small piece of property in the Jackson’s Oak section of Daphne.” Yet, despite his deep connection to the south, Bob has faced unwarranted labels as a "Yankee outside agitator." He humorously quips, "I was an inside agitator, like the one in a washing machine." Bob’s father and grandfather were involved in the Ku Klux Klan, though his father eventually left and became a Christian minister. It was his father’s dedication to sharing the gospel that sparked Bob’s interest in activism and charity.

Bob’s activism and equality fight began early in life during his time at Huntingdon College. As a senior, Bob was given a sociology assignment to research solutions to racial problems in the south. Bob, along with four other students who would later become known as the “Huntingdon Five,” discussed civil rights with students at the then Alabama State College for Negroes and interviewed Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and E. D. Nixon, much to the dismay of school authorities and the white student body at Huntingdon College.

Bob’s commitment to the civil rights movement was consistently met with resistance from white supremacists, often resulting in Bob being beaten unconscious, leading to brain damage and PTSD. But Bob was determined. He became the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee’s first white field secretary. Bob graduated with a degree in psychology and sociology and his activism did not stop there. He would go on to be arrested nearly 15 times by the summer of 1963 for his part in various civil rights protests and marches.

Bob met his wife, Pamela, in 2016 when they both attended the Black Hills Unity Concert in solidarity with their Native American brothers and sisters at Standing Rock. “I was in Rapid City with three of my Lady friends from Boulder, Bob and his friend Byron Buck were coming from the East Coast to direct us in a performance. We were there to do a performance piece about the Colonization of Native peoples in America,” Pamela recalls. “When I mentioned my dearest Quaker friends in Fairhope, the Rockwells, Bob’s ears perked up, ‘Fairhope where?’ He said. ‘Alabama,’ I replied and the rest is history, our love of the South, especially Alabama brought us together, and we have been together ever since.”

As a retired University History Professor, Bob has dedicated himself to sharing the untold stories of struggle and resilience in American history. Alongside Pamela they founded Smith Zellner Consulting. “What I like most about the work we do is seeing the faces of young people light up when they begin learning the true history of struggle in this country,” Bob shares. “I do wish that more people understood the fact that American’s youth will be better prepared to compete in the global economy when they can learn the uncensored history of our nation.” As dedicated human rights activists, Bob and Pamela focus their work on social justice causes and offer consulting skills. “My husband is very generous with his time and is always willing to share his knowledge of history,” Pamela adds. “I love spending time with young people and watching them blossom into community leaders.”

In their own backyard of Baldwin County, they have actively participated in efforts to bridge divides and promote equity. Notably, Bob highlights the work of Sean Graham and Ms. Vicki of the Hope Community, whose tireless dedication has brought the Fairhope community together across legal and social barriers. Because of their emphasis on racial justice and women’s equality, Bob and Pamela have joined the local Bahai’s, a religious community under the leadership of Ms. Sonya Bennett.

Most impressive, Bob’s memoir “Wrong Side of Murder Creek,” was adapted into the film Son of the South, which received two awards from A.F.I. World Peace Initiative the main division of New Generation In Action, which holds Special Consultative Status to the United Nations through United Nations Economic and Social Council. The film was awarded World Peace and Tolerance Narrative Feature Film. Both honors were presented at the World Peace and Tolerance Gala in Cannes, France, on January 18th, 2021 (Martin Luther King Jr.’s, Birthday) during a private ceremony.

When Bob reflects on his love for the Bay area, memories of his summers spent on Mobile Bay come flooding back. The anticipation of witnessing a Jubilee, an extraordinary natural phenomenon, was palpable. With their skiff in tow, Bob and his brothers would wade through the shallow waters, filling their boat with an abundant catch of flounder. Pamela adds, “I love Fairhope. We are after all on the eastern shore of America’s Amazon. The natural beauty is breathtaking, the pace is slow, and the people are so kind and courteous.”

Through their unwavering dedication and lifelong commitment to social justice causes, Bob and Pamela continue to inspire individuals and empower future generations to create a world where fairness and compassion prevail.

Pamela’s Favorite Quote: “OH THE COMFORT, the inexpressible comfort, of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh words, nor measure words; but to pour them all out, just as is, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keeping what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away” -George Eliot

Bob’s Favorite Thing About the Bay Area: Sunsets on the Bay.

Brad & Mary Sullivan

Brad, originally from the Mobile area, and Mary, originally from Illinois, have both found their home in the Bay area. They serve as the pastor of Surge Church, located in the Dawes Community of West Mobile. Brad’s passion for ministry has taken him across the globe, where he has traveled and spoken in numerous nations on five continents. In addition to their ministry positions, Mary is a Senior Analyst for Vertex Energy and Brad is a realtor with the Sessions Team at Roberts Brothers.

Brad's graduated summa cum laude from the University of Mobile with a degree in Theology. During his time at the university, he received the School of Religion Award, a testament to his academic excellence and commitment to his studies. Mary, on the other hand, is a graduate of Rhema Bible College in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where she gained a solid foundation in biblical teachings.

The mission of Surge Church is to bring about a "sudden and rapid increase forward" in people's lives through the power and grace of God. Brad and Mary find joy in witnessing individuals experience a surge of hope, empowerment, and spiritual growth that enables them to overcome limitations and reach new heights. Their ministry is centered around serving others, instilling hope, and reminding people that positive change is possible. “Ministry is about serving others and not being served,” says Brad. “Life in the ministry is more other people focused, which often requires putting one’s personal life and needs second. The more people who are willing serve others the more impact the ministry of a Church can have.”

Charitable work holds a special place in Brad and Mary's hearts. Surge Church operates Surge Cares, a monthly food distribution ministry that provides essential food and groceries to families in need, as well as those residing in assisted living facilities. Additionally, Brad's dedication to building a strong business network in the Dawes Community led him to establish the Annual Dawes Christmas Parade, an event that brings together local schools, churches, and businesses.

For Brad and Mary, charity work is not just a duty, but also a reflection of their faith and their desire to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. “Our heart is to follow Jesus’ example by going about doing as much good we can to as many people as we can. The Bible is clear that it is more blessed to give than to receive and serving others makes that principle a reality,” says Mary.

The Mobile Bay area holds a special place in Brad and Mary's hearts. Despite having traveled the world, they always find solace and a sense of belonging when they return to their Gulf Coast home. One treasured memory they hold dear is their wedding ceremony on the front steps of the iconic Bragg-Mitchell Mansion. The experience ties them to the city's rich history and symbolizes their commitment to each other and the community they serve.

Looking ahead, Brad and Mary eagerly anticipate the future of Surge Church and its continued expansion, envisioning a greater impact on the lives of individuals within the community.

Fun Fact: The Church was founded by Brad’s parents Jerry and Janice Sullivan as Living Word Church. The Church was turned over to Brad and Mary in 2015. It was in 2019, that Brad and Mary rebranded it as Surge Church.

Brandon & Candice Bolton

Bringing the fun to parties around the Gulf Coast, Brandon and Candice Bolton, are the dynamic duo behind South Alabama Inflatables. With their passion for bringing joy to people’s lives and their unwavering commitment to giving back to the community, the Boltons exemplify the true beauty of selflessness and dedication.

Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Brandon grew up on Dauphin Island Parkway, while Candice hails from nearby Semmes, where they currently reside with their three beautiful children: Hadley, Madison, and John-Lee. As owners and operators of South Alabama Inflatables, based in Semmes but serving all of Mobile and Baldwin County, the couple has created a business that thrives on spreading happiness.

Operating on the belief that inflatables are not just for backyard birthday parties, but can be for any event—and any age! “What we love most about our job is the joy our inflatables bring to everyone,” shares Candice. Brandon adds, “It doesn’t matter if your 2 or 92 it’s impossible to jump around in a bounce house or slide down one of awesome waterslides without a smile on your face.” Their dedication to exceptional customer service, professionalism, and respect has earned them the honor of being the only inflatable business in the Bay area accredited by the Better Business Bureau and over 100 5 star reviews on Google!

However, what truly sets the Boltons apart is their deep involvement in the community. Since their establishment in February 2022, they have donated or sponsored over $25,000 to local schools, churches, youth sports teams, charitable organizations, and recovery programs for those struggling with addiction. Their South Alabama Inflatables signs can be found at local ballparks throughout Mobile County, a testament to their belief in investing in the community that has supported them.

The Boltons' passion for giving back stems from their own personal experiences. Both raised in single-father households with mothers battling addiction, they understand the struggles faced by children who may not have the means to participate in various activities. Their mission is to provide opportunities for every child to experience something they otherwise might not have had the chance to experience. “We want people to know that it doesn’t always take one person doing a lot to help, if a lot just do a little it can have the same impact,” Brandon tells us.

The Boltons find great joy in the diverse beauty of the Bay area. From the landscape to the food and the people, they consider themselves fortunate to call this place home. Brandon fondly recalls his favorite local memory of "soft shelling" with his father on Bay Road near Nan Seas restaurant, collecting an abundance of softshell crabs and accidentally missing the next day of school from staying out too late.

As a family, they enjoy exploring the vibrant restaurant scene of Mobile, savoring the flavors of new local, family-owned establishments. The water and the woods provide them with a retreat, whether it's a weekend at the hunting camp or a family vacation in Gulf Shores.

Those who know the Boltons describe them as busy, kind, and selfless individuals. Despite their packed schedules, they always make time to help others. Their belief in the power of kindness and the impact it can have on someone's life is evident in their daily interactions.

Clare, one of the most caring and astute physicians around, operates Clarity Concierge where she serves as a general internist and offers top-notch aesthetic services.

Committed to learning, Jack’s talents cannot be quickly summarized. “In addition to my work with various organizations and legal jurisdictions, I hold a deep passion for working with private patients. I enjoy conducting evaluations on a range of conditions such as ADHD, memory decline, autism, depression, and anxiety. It's fulfilling to work with individuals on a personal level, diving into their unique circumstances and crafting a tailored approach to their treatment. I also relish the challenge of addressing complex psychological questions. These might come in the form of diagnosing a nuanced case of ADHD, helping an individual with autism navigate social situations, determining the origin of a memory decline, or formulating an effective treatment plan for someone with depression or anxiety. Each case is like a puzzle, and I derive great satisfaction from uncovering the pieces and helping my patients understand themselves better. Ultimately, it's incredibly rewarding to see the difference it makes in people's lives,” he shares.

As for Clare, she not only serves as a Major in Alabama’s National Guard, but she’s also a health care advocate that stops at nothing to ensure her patients get the best possible outcomes. Now accepting health insurance, Clare shares, “I am proud to offer a three-pronged approach for my patients that includes personalized medical care with an emphasis on wellness and prevention, as well as aesthetic services like fillers, Botox and more. Often, underlying psychological issues can result in medical issues, and vice versa. Working closely with Jack is a tremendous benefit for our patients as diagnosing patients with both our expertise eliminates wasted time and ultimately allows for more accurate treatment,” she shares.

Having served a tour of duty in Poland last year, and recently returning from one in Romania, the service and sacrifices Clare, Jack, and their children have made for our country are awe inspiring. While Clare cares for our service men and women, often in rough conditions, Jack holds down the home front and ensures their boys stay on track.

Regarding the instant kindness offered when you meet this family, Jack shares a bit of insight, “I spent much of my childhood with my grandparents in Toxey, Alabama. I remember shelling peas and swimming in creeks. I was always struck by the poverty and one winter my grandmother and I passed out baskets made by her church to countless families that did not have enough food, clothing, or presents for Christmas. It reminded me to never take things for granted and to have empathy for others.”

As for their love of Mobile?  “With a blend of influences from Native American, French, Spanish, Irish, and African heritage, we have this tapestry of traditions, festivals, and cuisines rooted in diversity. We have these majestic oak trees, historical homes, and even forgotten parks. Clare and I often spend free time just walking through downtown and midtown looking at all the potential,” Jack summarizes.

Jacks Guilty Pleasures: “Nutella. I love Nutella. I have to limit it to one jar a month. Max, my youngest son, loves it, too. And Jacob and I both love ice-cream. I think he could live off it if I allowed it!”

Clare’s Hobbies: Walking, sewing and family time!

Lacey Evans & Will Allam

In the heart of downtown Mobile, there's a place where delectable treats come to life, where flavors blend harmoniously, and where artistry meets dessert. This place is none other than Dropout Bakery & Co, co-owned by the talented Lacey Evans and William (Will) Allam. Lacey's journey from a fashion student to a renowned baker has been nothing short of extraordinary, and her passion for creating delicious works of art, alongside Will, is evident in every bite.

Originally hailing from Mobile, Alabama, Lacey is deeply rooted in the Bay area. Having graduated from St. Paul’s School with a perfect 4.0 GPA, Lacey headed out to Los Angeles to attend the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). While attending FIDM, she met and fell in love with Will, who is originally from Connecticut. Ultimately, Lacey dropped out of FIDM two years later, and alongside Will, they moved back to Mobile in 2019. Lacey’s love for the community and the vibrant atmosphere of the region is what has inspired her to establish her bakery here. Lacey finds immense joy in crafting innovative menus that evolve each week. From decadent pastries to stunning cakes for special occasions, she embraces the opportunity to keep things fresh and push the boundaries of flavor. “We make every pastry from scratch,” Lacey proudly boasts. “So, it takes quite a bit of time to produce each item. I think that’s evident in the taste and presentation of each of our menu items!” About creating new menu items each week, Will adds, “It is so fun to experiment with Lacey on new ideas, flavors, and getting those ideas from idea to plate. We strive for excellence in both aesthetic, and more importantly taste. The cost of high-quality ingredients that go into our pastries is worth every penny.”

Beyond their passion for baking, Lacey and Will have a deep-rooted commitment to giving back to the community. Dropout Bakery & Co regularly donates cakes and pastries worth thousands of dollars to fundraisers, schools, and various organizations. When asked about their “why,” Lacey says, “Businesses should always give back to the community that supports them.”

While Lacey and Will pour their hearts into their work, they also know the importance of leisure and relaxation. In her downtime, Lacey enjoys indulging in good food, soaking up the sun, and exploring the natural beauty of the Bay area. Beach trips with her boyfriend and her adorable Mini Goldendoodle, Sunnie, are a regular occurrence, allowing her to recharge and appreciate the breathtaking scenery. While Will says Fairhope beach is one of his favorite places to go and enjoy the area’s famous sunsets.

One memorable piece of advice that Lacey holds dear comes from her mom, who imparted the wisdom of "work now, play later." These words have guided her through the ups and downs, reminding her to stay focused and diligent in pursuit of her dreams. “The bakery’s grand reopening was one of the most inspiring and memorable moments,” recalls Will. “I was able to step beck and really see the community support what Lacey and I have worked so hard to create.”

Looking ahead, Lacey and Will are brimming with excitement for the future. They envision expanding Dropout Bakery & Co by opening more bakeries across the United States, bringing their culinary creations to new communities and spreading the joy of their sweet masterpieces.

Lacey’s Guilty Pleasure: I used to eat banana and mayo with sugar on it!

Chef Jeremiah Matthews & Tracy Ong

Born in Maine, Chef Jeremiah Matthews developed a passion for cooking while being raised along the Gulf of Mexico. His culinary journey began at 13 when he started washing dishes at a local restaurant in Gulf Shores. Little did he know that this humble start would pave the way for an exceptional career in the culinary world.

Jeremiah pursued formal culinary education at Paul Smiths College in upstate New York and later attended Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, France. His training included working in 3-star Michelin restaurants in Paris and the Burgundy region of France, immersing himself in the rich culture of the country. He then ventured to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he served as a backcountry chef and guide at the prestigious Spotted Horse Ranch.

Returning to his roots in Alabama, Jeremiah played a pivotal role in reviving a beloved local establishment, Jesse's Restaurant. With his culinary expertise and innovative approach, he breathed new life into the thriving Southern Alabama favorite. Building on this success, he then embarked on a new culinary venture by opening Southwood Kitchen in Daphne, which aimed to offer a fine dining experience in a relaxed and casual atmosphere.

Alongside Jeremiah's culinary journey stands Tracy Ong, his partner since 2012. Tracy serves as the office manager of MD Aesthetics of Mobile Bay. Hailing from a small town in Illinois, Tracy's entrepreneurial spirit shines through her management of Southbar in Daphne, which conveniently neighbors Southwood Kitchen. Southbar offers a lively bar atmosphere, complete with games, TVs, and a popular happy hour. “It didn’t take much convincing to follow Jeremiah into the culinary world. We opened Southwood Kitchen in 2017, and we did all of the renovations ourselves,” Tracy recalls. “Having a Chef /owner like Jeremiah who had worked in the field opening previous restaurants it was a no brainer, and it has thrived in Daphne.”

As business partners, Jeremiah and Tracy complement each other perfectly. “We both have our strengths. I’ve been told that I brought him out of shell as he’s quiet and I’m very talkative. He’s super creative and I excel at business and organization,” says Tracy.

In their downtime, Jeremiah and Tracy relish the warm Alabama weather and enjoy entertaining friends at their home. Whether it's grilling outdoors or spending time on their boat in Orange Beach. They reside on a farm in Silver Hill where they enjoy planting their own produce, and harvesting eggs from their chickens. The couple cherishes their blended family, with Tracy being a proud mother to Austin and Katie Burch, while Jeremiah is a dedicated father to Noah Matthews. Both Katie and Noah actively contribute to the success of Southwood Kitchen, working alongside their parents.

Looking ahead, the couple eagerly anticipates the opening of Ben's BBQ in Fairhope, a project they are currently working on. Additionally, they have plans to renovate an old Mexican restaurant in Fairhope, set to open its doors in 2024.

Tracy’s Guilty Pleasure: I watch all those terrible Bravo shows. I am a self-professed Bravo-holic.

Jeremiah’s Guilty pleasures: As an Auburn fan, I love to tease Tracy when we win! A true house divided!

Jason & Lauren Byrd

Hailing from Tallahassee, Florida, Jason's career in country music has allowed him to travel the world singing, and he carries his coastal roots wherever he goes. His big break into country music came when he met the legendary George Jones in the early nineties. Small gigs at local bars and honkytonks quickly turned into opportunities on stages across the country as the opening act for George, including the world-famous Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium.

"Better Life", his self-pinned duet with George Jones, was nominated for the 2022 Josie Music Awards Single of the Year, and his singles “Honkytonk and the Alter” and “No End in Sight” are both nominated for the 2023 Single of the Year. "I am humbled and honored to give George Jones fans the chance to hear one of his last recordings before he passed. I miss my friend and hope he is proud of me for “keeping it country!”

Jason and his wife, Lauren, also a Tallahassee native, love the Bay area, and Jason recently released “Gulf Coastin’”, a lively song sure to become a local anthem. With lyrics praising everything from the casual vibes of our backyard to our legendary honky-tonk, the Flora-Bama, this one is for us.

While Tallahassee remains his home base, Jason frequently performs around the country and for diverse audiences in the historical Nashville music scene. “There is no better feeling than playing music for a crowd and seeing the enjoyment it gives them."

Alongside Jason and their son Mason, Lauren has also found a true sense of purpose. As Vice President of Communications and Strategic Partnerships at the Florida Medical Association, Lauren advocates for physicians and their invaluable contributions to the community. “It’s inspiring to see the lifelong commitment our physicians uphold to serve their communities, deliver compassionate and affordable care, and advocate for their profession,” she says.

Lauren also dedicates her time to promoting the well-being of mothers and children, as evident through her involvement with the Children's Home Society of Florida, where she serves on the board. “As a mother, helping other mothers and children that need and rely on the love and support of their community is something I take seriously. I am acutely aware of how lucky I am to have the support of so many people, which has allowed me to raise our son in a safe and loving environment. I will do anything to give other mothers the same opportunity.”

Outside the realm of music, Jason's commitment to giving back shines through his involvement with The 2nd Alarm Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the behavioral health needs of the first responder community. A third-generation firefighter and twenty-eight-year veteran of the Tallahassee Fire Department, he intimately understands the challenges faced by first responders and their families.

The Bay area is special to both Jason and Lauren, and they cherish spending time with family and friends, especially at waterfront restaurants with Jason showcasing his musical talent. As Lauren looks toward the future, she eagerly anticipates the transformative years ahead for her family. “I think the next few years will be some of the best years of our lives, and I can’t wait to see where the adventure takes us!”

Lauren’s Favorite Hobbies: I love to entertain!

Ashley Williams Hogue, M.D.

Born and raised in Augusta, GA, Dr. Williams' journey to the Bay area began in 2015 when she arrived in Mobile to pursue her general surgery residency. Since then, she has become an integral part of the community, both professionally and personally. Dr. Williams' immediate family, including her husband, Dr. Antwan Hogue, and their three beautiful children, Amarii, Ava, and Atlas, have been pillars of support throughout her journey.

Dr. Williams' occupation as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at USA speaks volumes about her dedication and expertise. She is also a skilled surgeon, specializing in trauma, acute care surgery, and burns. Her work is not limited to the confines of the hospital; she also serves as the Director of the Center for Healthy Communities and the Director of Injury Prevention and Community Outreach. “My patients are the ones who hug loved ones on the way out the door, heading to work, but never clock-in,” she says. “They are the ones struck by immediate, unexpected tragedy that results in injury. I use my training and every resource at my disposal to restore function and return that patient home to their loved ones. That’s the goal, every single time.”

The variability of Dr. Williams' work is what she enjoys most. Every day brings new challenges as she cares for patients of all ages, providing stability in emergency departments, performing surgeries, and tending to critical care in the ICU. Beyond the hospital walls, Dr. Williams tirelessly advocates for injury prevention, emphasizing that many of the diseases and injuries she treats are preventable. “That’s what makes it so difficult,” she admits. “Many of my patients had more life to live.”

Dr. Williams' education and career have been marked by remarkable achievements and recognition. In just her second year as an Attending, she was honored as a Future Trauma Leader by the American College of Surgeons, an accolade bestowed upon only five trauma surgeons across the nation. Additionally, she received national recognition for her work on Project Inspire, winning the EAST Cox-Templeton Injury Prevention Paper Competition.

As the driving force behind Project Inspire, she empowers high-risk youth through trauma-informed training, education, professional development, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, mentorship, and job shadowing. Through this program, Dr. Williams has achieved remarkable success, reducing recidivism rates among participating youths to an astonishing 5.9% compared to the overall rate of 42% in Mobile County. When asked about her “why” Dr. Williams says: “Our community is only as strong as our most vulnerable. It benefits all of us to contribute to the underserved populations. Every time I engage in charitable work, I recognize that the impact on me is greater than the impact I intend to have on others.”

Having lived in the area for eight years, she cherishes the calming presence of the water as she commutes over the causeway. Dr. Williams and her husband enjoy exploring downtown Mobile and Fairhope.

The true source of joy in Dr. Williams’s life is her children. Each with their unique personalities and interests, Amarii, Ava, and Atlas bring laughter and happiness to their mother's life. Whether it's her oldest son's love for baseball, cooking, and music, her daughter's ambitious aspirations to win an Oscar or run a Fortune 500 company, or her youngest son's incredible athleticism at just two years old, Dr. Williams's children are her greatest joy.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Williams is excited about fulfilling a lifelong dream. With the support of her loving husband, she plans to build a home on three acres of land where they can finally ride horses to check the mail or welcome their guests. It is a dream she has carried since the beginning, and with fingers crossed, it may soon become a reality.

And of course, he gets the most joy by exposing his children to the fun and exciting activities he grew up enjoying.

When asked about her work, Dr. Smith expresses her enjoyment in assisting patients on their journey to a better quality of life. She believes in providing her patients with undivided attention and devotes herself wholeheartedly to each case, ensuring their well-being is her top priority. However, she wishes more people understood the challenges she faces in her profession. “I don’t think people understand how hard it is to predict how much time a patient will need in the office and during surgery,” she says. “I promise I’m not wanting to run late on purpose, but some patients need more time. When I’m with a patient, I’m completely with that patient and they have my undivided attention.”

Dr. Smith's education and career highlights are a testament to her pursuit of excellence. While she takes great pride in her professional achievements, it is her ability to strike a harmonious balance between her career and family life that she holds dear. Fitzgerald L. Wright

Born and raised in Mobile, Fitzgerald L. Wright has deep roots in the community. After graduating from Murphy High School where he played wide receiver, he then pursued his love for football at Florida A&M University before obtaining his BBA in Business Administration from the University of Mobile.

Fitzgerald's business ventures span across various industries. As the Chief Operating Officer of Wrights Charters, Inc., a family-owned motor coach company, he continues the legacy started by his father, Levi Wright Sr. Fitzgerald also owns Wright's Coaches, LLC in Pensacola, FL, Wright's Dump Truck Services, LLC in Mobile, AL, and Wright's & Associates Investment Group, also in Mobile. However, his latest endeavor, Fitzgerald's Cigars, is his pride and joy. “I love each one of my businesses because they each came from an idea, and then I put in the hard work to make them a reality,” he says.

Founded in April 2021, Fitzgerald's Cigars emerged as a passion project when the motor coach industry faced significant setbacks in the pandemic. “I had no money coming into my household,” he recalls. “I never imagined something like this would happen to me. I realized I had to do something.” Fitzgerald turned to his love for cigars and embarked on a journey to establish his own cigar brand. Through his international travels, he crafted three unique blends: The Presidential (Connecticut), The Executive (Habano), and The Signature (Maduro).

Reflecting on the struggles and sacrifices entrepreneurs face, Fitzgerald says, “I think people misunderstand the struggle people go through to create any business,” he says. “They don’t see the long days, and the lack of time spent with family. As entrepreneurs we have to wear many hats.”

Fitzgerald actively engages in community service, dedicating his time and resources to causes close to his heart. One notable involvement is his participation in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign, where he raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Fitzgerald is determined to make a difference in the lives of those affected by the disease. ”With this disease, it wears and tears on the family and the community. It is an honor to be a part of this organization,” he shares. In addition, Fitzgerald donates his time and services to the Kiwanis Boys & Girls Club in Mobile, supporting the Lady Bengals basketball team and the Port City Lynk AAU team.

Parting Advice: Give 50% to your business, that is what you will receive in return, but give your business 100% and you will find your business going places you never thought it would go!

Audra Maxwell

As the owner and stylist at Fireflies Salon and Spa in Spanish Fort, Audra's passion for her craft shines through every client she touches. But her journey to success wasn't a straight path; it took resilience, determination, and a leap of faith.

Married for 17 years to her loving husband, she has three daughters who fill her life with joy—Koty, Peyton, and Presley. Together, they have lived in Raleigh, NC, Nashville, TN, and Jacksonville, FL. However, Audra's heart has always remained tied to the Gulf Coast, where she spent her childhood.

Surprisingly, Audra never envisioned herself as a salon owner. She simply loved doing hair and makeup. “When we moved to Spanish Fort, I had my sights set on opening a coffee shop,” she recalls. “It takes a lot of energy rebuilding your client base, and I just wasn't sure if I wanted to take that on again. But the Lord had other plans!” The energy and passion of her Fireflies team brings her immense joy, and she has never looked back.

While Audra's talent have made a mark on countless individuals, one experience in Nashville stands out. At her church, she encountered a group of special needs women who lacked family support. Touched, Audra volunteered to cut their hair. She dedicated time to not only enhancing their beauty but also creating meaningful connections. “I believe we are to give back with the skills God’s given us and that was a blessing to me,” she fondly recalls.

To truly understand Audra's impact, one must turn to the words of those who know her best. “You don’t have to be in her presence long to know that Audra touches everyone around her,” says friend, Beth Davis of Daphne. “Audra is a brilliant businesswoman, and a good wife, great mama, generous boss, and loyal friend. One of the most determined ladies I’ve ever met, there’s nothing she’s set her mind to that she hasn’t accomplished!”

As Audra looks to the future, she is filled with excitement and is committed to being the best owner she can be for her team and to foster growth within her business. Additionally, she envisions continuously adapting to meet the evolving needs of her clients. And, of course, traveling with her family as they embark on new adventures together.

Joie Biancardi

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Joie Biancardi's family relocated to the Gulf Coast when she was just a young child. After completing high school, Joie's thirst for adventure led her to travel the world. She embarked on a journey that took her to England and later Seattle, Washington. However, the allure of family and the scenic beauty of the Gulf Coast brought her back to Mobile in 2007, where she has made her home ever since.

As the Human Resources Manager at the Original Oyster House, Joie plays a crucial role in coordinating administrative activities related to the company's most valuable asset—the employees. With her extensive range of responsibilities, Joie ensures that the company operates smoothly. Despite being the sole HR representative locally, Joie says she couldn’t do it without the help of their amazing team. “We all come together to meet not only company standards but to also ensure our wonderful customers have the best experience with us!”

In her role, she delves deep into understanding the "why" behind situations and offers support to both employees and managers. “A company is only as strong as its employees and we should love them, and lead them,” she says. The biggest thing Joie wants people to know about HR is that these professionals wear multiple hats on a daily basis and working in hospitality is truly no joke! “Rain or shine, late nights, holidays, long waits, you name it – employees make sure everything is as perfect as it can be for their guests, regardless of what’s going on in their personal lives,” she tells us. And if her schedule isn’t hectic enough, Joie is currently continuing her education by studying for her Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional certification.

Joie makes sure to give back to the community by serving as a Board Member of Baldwin County Society for Human Resource Management for many years. And, as a breast cancer survivor, Joie makes it her mission to give back to those still fighting this horrible disease. “I went through a period where I wasn’t going to tell anyone. I had a change of heart after realizing the number of things that were going to change in my life and started writing about my diagnosis on my blog,” she shares.

Joie has fallen in love with many aspects of Gulf Coast living, especially if it involves being on the water. She loves spending time with her friends and family and is excited to watch her daughter continue to blossom into a beautiful, intelligent, young woman. “She is almost 15 and is excited to start driving. She’s growing up so fast and I’m thankful I get to be a part of it,” she beams.

Timothy recognizes that completing transactions requires collaboration with realtors, attorneys, bankers, inspectors, and contractors, among others.

And though he loves his career, Timothy wishes more people understood that the real estate industry is not a path to easy money—it takes immense work! “As an entrepreneur, work is consistent, requiring follow-up, personal contacts, and the like,” he shares. “It is more of a challenge when working for yourself.  The business is constant.  In order to become successful, I believe one must be available and knowledgeable. There are no days off!”

Additionally, he actively contributes to organizations such as the Alpha Charitable Foundation, March of Dimes, Real Men Wear Pink, and many others. “I was taught that only what you do for Christ will last. I understand growth is in direct proportion to the service that we render to others,” he shares.

Timothy loves the southern hospitability of the Bay area, stating the beaches, fresh seafood, and the unique culture is what has kept him around throughout the years. Looking to the future, Timothy eagerly anticipates the rewards of his hard work and envisions a comfortable retirement.

Memorable Piece of Advice: In my adult life, my mother, Jessie Mills, encouraged me to,  “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding.”  Proverbs 3:5  - King James Version.  To this day, I share this scripture to encourage others.

Makenzie Oates

As a hairstylist, Makenzie has found her true calling at Salon Sparrow, her newly opened salon located in West Mobile. With a specialization in blonding and formal hair, Makenzie creates stunning transformations that leave her clients feeling confident and beautiful. “My favorite part of my job is the instant gratification of seeing women become more confident in themselves after their hair appointments,” Makenzie says. “I love when my clients become more like friends and family. Of course, it is also fun to hear about their lives—the highs, the lows, and all of the drama!” There is a misconception that hairdressing is merely a backup career, but Makenzie emphasizes that it is her lifelong passion. Building a successful career in this field takes continual investment. “This is not a career that happens overnight,” she warns. “To make it you have to continually invest in yourself and your clients.”

Makenzie takes pride in opening her own salon, a monumental achievement realized alongside her business partner, Brooklyn Johnston. In recognition of her talent, Makenzie received the Nappie award for Best New Hairstylist in 2020, further solidifying her reputation as a rising star in the industry.

Beyond her time in the salon, Makenzie’s faith is the driving force behind her founding Abundantly More, a local faith-based non-profit ministry that supports young women aged 18 to 28 who are navigating the transitional phase of life. “Over the last three years, we have served over 250 ladies within our community in their pursuit of their relationship with Jesus Christ,” she proudly shares. “We have had women from all walks of life that come together to participate in Bible study.” When asked about her why, Makenzie shares, “I was always raised to love others the same way that Jesus loves me. The joy that comes from serving others and making them feel seen and loved is a fulfillment that can only come when you are carrying out the Lord’s plan for your life.”

One of Makenzie's fondest local memories is her participation as a yellow Azalea Trail Maid. Being part of this tradition allowed her to discover the rich history of Mobile and forge new connections with people from diverse backgrounds. In her downtime, Makenzie cherishes her role as "Aunt Kenz" to her nieces Catherine and Maia. Whether it's spending quality time with them or relaxing poolside with a captivating book, Makenzie finds solace and happiness in these simple pleasures.

Three Words to Describe Brad: Calm, caring, and tech-savvy!

Kim Kelly

As Gallerist, and Owner of Sophiella Gallery, Kim Kelly has a knack for finding what is most beautiful in life. Born in North Dakota to first generation wheat farmers, Kim and her family made the move to Reston, VA., a “planned community” designed and built in the late 1960s by innovative architects. “Reston was referred to as a ‘place’, not a town or city, and was covered with walking paths that wound throughout, and even under streets,” recalls Kim. “It was paradise for young explorers like me!”

After graduating with a Bachelor’s in Communications from Virginia Tech, Kim worked in advertising as a producer and scriptwriter for commercials and videos, and later, when her children were young, Kim worked as a professional photographer, shooting and developing prints in her own darkroom.

Now, in her everyday life at Sophiella Gallery, Kim enjoys bringing people and art together, living by the gallery’s slogan: “We connect people with art that speaks to them.” Kim, and her staff, offer a variety of styles, genres, and subject matter, so that everyone that walks into the gallery can find something that they can identify with. “I enjoy talking with clients about what it is they find interesting about a painting or three-dimensional work,” Kim shares.

Sophiella Gallery truly is a treasure trove of various art mediums, with something new to discover constantly. “You can visit the gallery and find works on paper or small ceramic pieces at low price points. Of course, we love our abundant offering of large canvases but anytime we can help a customer find even a small but special piece, it means a lot to us,” says Kim. “We also love when gallery visitors just come by to browse! We like to think of ourselves as a respite in a noisy world.”

A true testament to her love for her community, Kim often uses her gallery to host charitable and cultural events throughout the year. “We often host events that involve the community and we pursue partnerships with groups such as the Drug Education Council and L’Arche. I love my gallery life so much that it is a joy for me to share it with others in our community!”

Married to her wonderful husband, Clark, and mother to Avery, Kate, and William, Kim loves her life down on the banks of Dog River. “We all adore being on the water, whether it’s simply taking in the sunset on our dock, or fishing in Mobile Bay. We also enjoy time exploring the Mobile Tensaw Delta. Especially in the fall!”

She takes pleasure in encouraging her clients to step out of their comfort zones and try new looks. “It’s such a joy to help women open up a whole new avenue of style that they can now add to their closet,” Kati says. “Fashion is a total expression of who you are as a person!”

Kati received her degree in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Studies from the University of Southern Mississippi. Recently, she celebrated the one-year anniversary of her shop, overcoming the challenges and obstacles that come with the first year of business. “The first year of business is definitely the hardest, lots of learning lessons, mistakes, and ups and downs,” she confesses. “But it was also so fun! I have met the most amazing people this year that are not only customers, but also now friends.”

Having grown up in the Bay area, Kati’s love for the area runs deep. “I love being so close to the water. There is nothing like being able to hop in your car and be less than an hour away from the beach in both directions! I spend a ton of time on Dog River with family and friends and I love being able to enjoy a sunset cruise and a cocktail in the afternoons,” she tells us. Kati’s favorite memories growing up here involve her Friday nights spent with friends cruising in the afternoons on a wooden Fish Boat.

The most helpful advice Kati has ever received came from her time interning as a college student with a local boutique. “The owner was so honest and open about how difficult opening a business was and breaking into the retail industry. She made a point to share all the industry secrets and advice she had learned that others tend to keep to themselves as she wanted to make sure she could pave a better path for others moving forward,” Kati recalls. “Years later when I decided to start making moves to open my shop I called her up and just like she had promised she answered all my questions and was a fountain of information I would have never known! Since then I have always strived to do the same for others.”

Looking toward the future, Kati is excited about the second year of her business. As she continues to style and curate fabulous looks for Mobile and beyond.
