ROBERT “ROBBIE” MCGHEE
Robbie has a big job. “As the elected Vice Chairman and Chief Governmental Affairs Officer of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PBCI), I serve our Tribe alongside the Tribal Chair and the Members of the Tribal Council. I represent the Tribe in state government, the US Congress, the White House, and Federal Agencies to enhance and protect our tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and economic development,” he shares.
Interestingly, PBCI is the only federally recognized Indian tribe in Alabama. A sovereign nation near Atmore for 200 years, they’ve contributed to countless projects benefiting Tribal Members and communities throughout the state and more importantly, our local Gulf Coast communities. “I’m fortunate that my career has afforded me the opportunity to meet Presidents, US Senators and Representatives, Governors, State and Local leaders and tribal leaders from the Indian Country,” he tells us.
Impressed, he adds, “Advocating for my Tribe, other tribal nations, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians at the highest level of government has been an honor. Serving at the Department of Interior, the US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and in the private governmental affairs sector has provided me with expertise on issues of tribal sovereignty, land, economic development, gaming and more.” He’s reluctant to spell it out, so we will—the Poarch Creek Indians and Wind Creek Casino matter.
Dedicated to service, Robbie explains, “President John F. Kennedy’s (and Spiderman’s!) quote ‘For of those to whom much is given, much is required’ has always inspired me. Blessed, I serve on boards such as Alabama Humanities Alliance, Alabama Children First, 2022 Real Men Wear Pink Campaign, Gulf Coast Exploreum, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, National Indian Child Welfare Association, Center for Native American Youth, Native American Rights Fund. and the USA Alumni Board.”
A downtown Mobilian, he shares, “I express my personality through clothing! I like casual looks with stylish accents—shoes, eyewear, and watches are critical! Yet I’m comfortable in flip-flops and ball caps, too. And I collect modern art from around the world to mix with traditional pottery, baskets, and cultural works.”
As for his heart? “My faith, family, friends, culture, and ancestors matter most. Raised by loving parents who instilled in my brother Daniel and me that we could accomplish anything, I constantly strive to be a role model for them and my people. Luckily, I also have extraordinary friends and we truly bring out the beauty in each other.”
Surprised to learn Robbie is sensitive, he concludes, “I hurt easily and do my best not to disappoint or hurt others, and I have high standards for that treatment in return. Simply put, I’m not naïve, I’m just amazed and humbled by the strength and beauty in others.”
Karaoke Favorite? “Neon Moon’ by Brooks & Dunn.”
