Peace, Love & Peonies

Ewa Wiggins – Horticulturist

With the sweltering heat outside, it’s hard not to talk about the weather, much less want to work in our yards, making it the perfect time to turn our attention to our interior plants. A quick glance at any Instagram feed will remind you that big leaves are super chic right now, and Stokley’s Garden Express in midtown Mobile is making it easier to level up your greenery game with a sale on fiddle leaf figs. A bonus? Stokley’s extensive inventory of unique pottery to put them in. Ewa Wiggins, an experienced horticulturist, shares some tips on the best way to care for them.

Hello!

From stylish hotel lobbies to luxe spas, fiddle-leaf figs are everywhere. Perhaps it’s because they stand out with their dramatic oversized leaves, making them hard to miss, but we’ve definitely seen a spike in people wanting them for their interior spaces. Luckily, we’re having a sale on these beauties right now! Come by and browse our selection. While you’re here, make sure to choose one of our extensive collection of pots to take it home in. We’ll happily pot it, load it in your car, and even deliver it if needed.

Once you’ve got it home,  put it in a spot where it will receive plenty of indirect sunlight, ideally, near an east-facing window where it can sit in the indirect light all day without any direct sun in the afternoon. Too much direct sunlight will cause the leaves to burn, turn brown, and fall off. On the other hand, it does need sunlight, so an always-dark corner will result in leaves that turn yellow and fall off.

Fertilize your fiddle-leaf fig with a nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium ratio of 3-1-2, which we stock here. Watering is possibly the biggest challenge with these trees. Test the soil with your finger before watering. It it’s at all moist two inches down, don’t water it, since the roots need to dry out between watering.

Some are confused by a fig tree that doesn’t produce fruit, but in their native habitat of the rainforests of western Africa, they do just that. The one you set in your family room won’t be able to bear fruit, but it will make a fantastic architectural statement. Of course, feel free to call us or stop by if you have questions. We pride ourselves on providing  top-notch advice. Enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere as well as customer service second to none. We hope to see you soon!

Peace, love and peonies,

– Ewa
