NAIL IT!

A national obsession, who are we to argue with the hashtag, #nails, and the 151 million posts on Instagram? Whether you prefer clean and simple or bold and beautiful, manicures have become an artform that’s clearly here to stay. Even the manicurist has become a celebrity in their own right, too. Luckily, Mobile’s own nail-pro, Catherine Hannahan, is here to share a few of her tip-top holiday trends that will prepare you to sleigh.

For most of us, the idea of taking a little sliver of time to pamper ourselves is simply delicious. And, a manicure seems to do the trick. Around for thousands of years, and once reserved for only the very wealthy, a manicure is downright common today. And, what’s not to love? They’re relatively fast, affordable and last longer than a spray tan. Our biggest decisions range from square or round, long or short, red or pink, and so on. From there, we’re able to sit back and soak up the selfcare as time seems to stop just for a few precious moments.

However, a powerful cuticle culture has evolved and elevated a manicure to an headline making artform. From Jennifer Lopez’s new greige neutral polish affectionately referred to as “rich girl” to Hailey Bieber's famous glazed donut nails, we've seen a variety of manicure styles go viral throughout the year. No longer just for A-listers, perhaps you might enjoy a festive mani, too. After all, it's easy to stick to your go-to colors, shapes, and styles during the holiday hustle and bustle. But, if you're ready to shake things up and consider trying a new nail trend, local nail artist and expert, Catherine Hannahan, is serving up styles from the festive and feminine to the glitzy and daring.

For Catherine, every day is different—just the way she likes it. “I took an interest in art at a very young age. Interestingly, my paintings and drawings have always been extremely intricate and detailed which naturally translates into my ability to create beautiful nails. I love what I do and this career choice has allowed me to express my creativity. No two days are alike and it’s so fun to collaborate with clients,” she tells us.

As for what’s trending this holiday season, Catherine shares, “For the most part, square and round are still around but almond and coffin shapes are extremely popular. Polish trends range from Ombre and glitter to colored French tips and even artistic lines. Really, anything that looks custom or a bit over the top and creative goes.” Acknowledging it takes true technique and talent, we wonder how she accomplishes these tiny treasures. “I can’t give away all my secrets, but perfectly preparing the nails, a steady hand, proper tools, and attention to detail are extremely helpful. Also, listening to what the client has in mind is essential,” she adds.

If you’re looking to serve up seconds and cradle a favorite glass of vino with flair, detailed designs with Catherine can take up to two hours and a simpler manicure takes approximately 45 minutes. Prices start at $45 and go up accordingly. “I offer a unique and personal setting where my clients can relax and feel comfortable with a one-on-one experience. The most rewarding part of my job is satisfying customers and seeing them leave happy. Knowing I’ve brought joy to someone’s day brings me joy, too.”
