The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jospeh Guy Helmsing, Lady Elizabeth Wilbourn Helmsing has not only the prestigious honor of reigning as this year’s Mobile Carnival Association Queen, but also as the Leading Lady of the Order of Dragons, an honor she doesn’t take for granted.

Currently a senior at The University of Alabama where she is studying communications and global health, Elizabeth has her sights on attending an accelerated nursing program to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse practitioner.

Having grown up in a family who has been deeply involved with Mobile’s Carnival traditions for decades, Elizabeth has a myriad of wonderful memories surrounding the season from watching both of her parents in their respective organization’s parades to now attending all of the fun social events as a newly 22-year-old debutante. “As I’ve grown up, I have gotten to see how important Mardi Gras is to our whole community and how many different ways people are able to participate in our city-wide celebration,” she shares.

In her free time, Elizabeth enjoys the outdoors, particularly being on the water or the beach, making the most of Mobile’s picturesque surroundings. “I was fortunate enough to spend lots of time growing up on both Mobile Bay and the Gulf,” she recalls. “I love both of them equally, even though I am from Mobile I feel more at home on the water. I also very much enjoy spending time in the pretty woods north of Mobile.” Her love for travel has taken her to diverse locations, from the Great Barrier Reef to the Swiss Alps.

Love Letter to Mobile:

“My love for our community is centered around the uniqueness of Mobile as my favorite coastal city and home. Mobile’s quintessential cultural event is Mardi Gras, and it is so universally loved because of its ability to engage everyone in our city.”

Expressing her affection for Mobile, Elizabeth shares how our unique culture has helped shape her into the woman she is today. “The uniqueness of the Gulf Coast and the cultural opportunities Mobile brings, such as Mardi Gras, is something my family and I are extremely grateful for,” she tells us. “I think it is the community that makes the person, and here in the Mobile Bay area, I have been blessed with an abundance of amazing friends and family who I very much look up to and have shaped who I am today.”

Described by her friends and family as energetic and loyal, it is no surprise Elizabeth has been chosen for both the honor of serving as the MCA Queen and as the Leading Lady for the Order of Dragons. “I could not be more grateful to be involved in all of the fun this year,” she concludes.
