DESIGNING PERFECTION

With over 40 years of combined experience in the event industry, Jim and Layla Parker are part of the ACCESS family. Why? They’re always professional, fair, happy, and just as invested as we are when it comes to a planning a successful mega bash or a small soiree. Considered our secret weapon, we figure it’s time to let the cat out of the bag since they launched their own business, Coastal Events and Design, and they got married to boot. Our top tip? Add them to your contacts immediately and thank us later.

Coming off Carnival amazed by the sights and sounds, we’ve got parties on our mind. From the balls to the coronations, we’re not just a city born to celebrate, we know how to celebrate— and how to plan them accordingly. Known for hosting memorable events ourselves, we can’t imagine doing them without Jim and Layla Parker of Coastal Events and Design.

Our go-to party support system, we can’t imagine not having them by our side in the tough trenches that is event planning. From the intricate lighting and sound systems to the memorable décor and whimsical extras, we are demanding and stop at nothing to create unique events that are nothing short of memorable. Always game for the seemingly impossible, they’ve transformed a downtown speak easy into a modern Miami inspired dance factory, converted a car showroom more than once into a posh party zone, a cocktail lounge into a game show set, and so much more.

But it goes go much deeper. Event planning is a tough business as it requires limitless resources, out of the box ideas, a finger on the pulse and even more patience. Throw in multiple meetings per client, attention to endless details, a lot of late nights, weekend work, and heavy lifting, and we’re just at the tip of the iceberg. Don’t overlook event planning also requires an organized and dedicated team that excel in communicating and dependability. Often overlooked and found working furiously behind the scenes, Jim and Layla do all of this flawlessly and always with big smiles for all.

Interestingly, Jim and Layla married in 2022 and the how they met is Just as sweet as they are. With grandparents living just houses apart, they’ve known each other most of their lives. “I can recall seeing him at church when we were children, but it wasn’t until he drove by me standing in my grandparent’s driveway when we were older that he really noticed me. He was blasting music and he almost got into a wreck as he checked me out!” Layla jokes.

From cold sparks, retro video games, classic carnival games, laser tag, casino tables, video screens in every size to those coveted big statement items such as arbors and cocktail walls as well as the basics like tables and linens, we aim to be a one-stop-event-shop. Naturally, if a client is looking for something we don’t have, we’ll find it. We’re an event concierge business,”

Fast forward many years later, Jim and Layla finally met face to face at an event where Jim was the DJ and a now a longtime event expert and Layla, an established photographer, was operating the photobooth. From there, they married and decided to merge their event forces into one company, Coastal Events and Design, in 2022.

A well-known face around the Gulf Coast, Jim has expert skills in event lighting design and audio/visual services that includes sound engineering, video production and even DJ duties. Having worked for some big names around the country, Layla’s photography, and decorating skills pair perfectly with Jim’s proficiency in all things tech. A true blended family business, Layla’s children Emorie, Stephen, and Ava help, too.

“Our business has exploded beyond anything we could have imagined! We’ve been so touched by the extraordinary community support and positive feedback we’ve received. This success fuels us to take each and every event to the next level to ensure our clients are beyond happy with our work. This means we always strive to have everything that’s current and what people want for their special occasions. We’re an event concierge business,” Layla shares.

Curious about their instant success, Layla credits Jim. “Jim is always happy! I love his smile and positive attitude. As for his work ethic, he goes non-stop until it’s done regardless of the time or conditions. And somehow, he always makes sure I’m okay. He is also incredibly personable, patient and a great listener, too. He has so many connections and that has proven to be essential as we were up and running almost overnight. From the Bay area and beyond, we’re doing parties, celebrations, conference center and corporate events, weddings, and more. And we love it!” Of course, Jim credits Layla, sharing, “Layla is so good at keeping the team and I organized and efficient! She’s also very good with the décor aspects, stocking our warehouse with what’s trending, and the smaller details that are so important in creating a successful event. Plus, I get to work side-by-side with my bride!”

Always busy and always calm, Jim and Layla always say, “If you can dream, we can create it.” With the proof to back it up, they were tasked with turning Mobile’s Convention Center into a Coachella themed Mardi Gras ball for the Order of Venus. A tall order considering Coachella is one of the most famous music and art festivals in the world. Called “Mobchella,” Layla ensured the space was decked out with fun, large abstract art pieces, giant festive balloon clusters and plenty of ceiling décor. Jim added his share with huge, themed video screen displays and coordinating lighting. As newlyweds, they love wedding event planning, too. “I love the event business because we constantly meet new people and it’s never the same day twice!” Layla concludes.
