The story of Charles Phillips Antiques begins with the passion and drive of its founder, Charles Phillips. From a young age, Charles developed an affinity for antique coins, sparking a lifelong interest in historical artifacts. At just seven years old, he started buying and selling these antique treasures, and by the age of sixteen, he had ventured into the antique business with his mother.

After college, Charles returned to his hometown along with his wife, Sue, to open their business. Over the years, the business has evolved, adapting to changes in sources, economy, and trends. Interestingly, all six of Charles and Sue's children have been involved in the business at various stages of their lives, including their daughter, Audrey Phillips Lapeyrouse.

As you venture onto the property of Charles Phillips Antiques, you're stepping into a place like no other. The setting, spread across 60 acres, exudes a homely charm, with long oak-lined gravel driveway. Despite its ever-changing nature, visitors find themselves immersed in a thrilling atmosphere. “My grandparents bought the 60 acres of land over 60 years ago. You drive past our family homes on your way to the warehouses. Back in the day you would see my grandfather out bush hogging or working on some various project,” Audrey fondly recalls.

With eight expansive warehouses, visitors can easily lose themselves in the mesmerizing array of antiques. Yet, within this seemingly vast expanse, the warmth of the staff makes everyone feel like a part of the family. “No matter what, you can still find someone to help you. Granted, that help might come from a long time customer who is also shopping!”

What sets Charles Phillips Antiques apart is its exceptional offerings sourced from over 40 different countries worldwide. Charles personally curates each piece, with a focus on Eastern Europe, former English colonies, and regions in the top of Africa. The business boasts an extensive collection of architectural antiques, antique furniture, and smaller items. Moreover, they have a range of unique pieces designed and crafted on-site.

As word spread about their unique offerings, the business began attracting decorators, dealers, and customers from near and far. The visibility on HGTV shows further catapulted their success, attracting visitors from across the country, eager to uncover hidden gems. “It’s been fun and helpful with spreading our customer base. We now see people flying in from around the country to shop,” Audrey tells us.

And, in recent times, the demand for antique doors has surged, coinciding with an increase in building and renovation projects. The charm and character that antique doors add to modern designs have made them a popular choice among customers. Additionally, their custom-made tables, consoles, and antique chests of drawers remain evergreen favorites.

For Audrey, her love of the antiques business has been steadfast throughout her life. And, her role in the family’s business has been ever changing. From painting/refinishing the furniture, to now mainly working with dealers and decorators with bulk buying and running the social media, Audrey’s day is never boring. When asked what a typical day looks like for her, Audrey says, “I first check all platform messages/comments, weigh which ones are urgent to answer, post photos, send out invoices, and annoy our manager, Jerry, with questions,” she laughs. “Most mornings I go to the shop for a few hours and pick out which pieces to feature. This involves chatting with my dad about what’s arriving and brainstorming new ideas to build our brand and image online with my mom.”

Over the years, the business has witnessed its share of challenges, from economic fluctuations to the unprecedented events of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the spirit of entrepreneurship and adaptability has allowed Charles Phillips Antiques to thrive. In the wake of Covid-19, with Audrey's valuable contributions and a strong online presence, the business found a new way to reach customers and cater to their needs during difficult times.

And, the future looks exceptionally promising for Charles Phillips Antiques. Audrey envisions a continuing journey of growth and expansion. With 17 grandchildren and more to come, the next generation seems ready to take on the mantle and continue the family legacy.

Being a part of a family business brings a special sense of fulfillment to Audrey, and the family's bond extends to Audrey's husband, Ludger Lapeyrouse, who shares her love for history and antique gadgets. Visits to the store led to their romance, and now, as parents, they delight in seeing their children, Ludger (3) and Hunter (almost 2), revel in the wonders of the business. “They call my dad ‘Bop’ and they love running around the buildings. It reminds me of my childhood down there with my sisters. It’s fun to see the next generation running around,” Audrey shares.

Beyond work, Audrey's life revolves around her family and her passions. She enjoys creating delicious meals for her loved ones and cherishing quality family time. Long walks and reading serve as her escapes, recharging her spirit amidst the bustling joy of family life.

The journey of Charles Phillips Antiques is a testament to the power of passion, family, and resilience. As the business continues to thrive, it leaves an indelible mark on all who wander through its doors, preserving the beauty of history for generations to come.
