ANDEE THOMAS

Clearly, Andee is one to watch. This year’s chair for the prestigious American Cancer Society’s Vintage Affair Gala in September, Andee is honored to be chosen and tells us, “When I first moved to Mobile, I worked in surgical oncology and we coordinated with ACS often, leading me to see the true benefits that patients received. I hope that by being chair this year I can do my part to further provide resources to those who need them within our community.”

Married to Stephen, Andee divulges, “It doesn’t matter if I am in my PJs or a ball gown, Stephen always makes me feel like I’m the most beautiful girl in the world.” And their 5-year-old daughter, Chandler? “She inspires me to better myself. My child has the biggest heart and I hope I can show half of her love and positivity to people.”

Currently a Senior Hospice Care Consultant with Kindred Hospice, Andee assists families navigating through the hospice process. “The most rewarding part of my job is being able to help families and patients through the most difficult times of their lives and offer them love and support.“ Her background is in nursing, however, and she recently went back to school to obtain a degree in healthcare administration.

Stating her personality is expressed through her event-hosting, she says, “I love a great event. Whether it’s a birthday or tacky sweater party, I pour myself into every little detail trying to ensure it’s fun and memorable.” Also self-aware, Andee shares, “I tend to be an overachiever. I sometimes put too much pressure on myself. I love to see others happy, though, so I always strive to make whatever is needed happen. My husband jokes that I don’t  know how to say no to people.” Stephen sweetly describes her as “caring, loving, bubbly, energetic, and determined.” We wholeheartedly agree with him.

Desert island must-haves? “A hammock, my favorite swimsuit, and maybe a bottle of rum (hopefully, I can track down ice and a blender).”

Any phobias? “Water, which is funny because I love the beach. You will only catch me on the sand or the boat—I don’t need any creatures getting me. It’s a running joke that I probably even hold my breath in the shower.”

DRS. CULLEN MCCARTHY & FLO DAVILA-MCCARTHY

Talk about a smart couple! Both doctors and parents to Finn and Charlie, Cullen is a Vascular Surgeon at Cardio-Thoracic & Vascular Surgical Associates, specializing in arterial and venous disease. Not to be outdone, Flo is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at the soon-to-open USA Health Coastal OB/GYN, specializing in gynecological care and anything in the field of obstetrics.

Driven, Cullen shares, “I get to take care of people from my hometown and will for the rest of my career. And I get to operate on basically every part of the body!” For Flo, it’s all about the bonds she develops with patients. “Whether it’s an exciting milestone like starting a family or a challenging diagnosis, my patients become part of my family,” she beams.

Supporters of Ducks Unlimited, the Nature Conversancy, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, they explain, “We owe it to our children and future generations to protect our planet.” As for down time, Cullen lists cooking, boxing, duck hunting, restoring antique guns, and watches—wishing he had time to do any of it! Also a cook, Flo loves to experiment with recipes and adds, “I’m a huge orchid enthusiast and I’m trying to grow some from seeds. We’ll see how that goes!”

Both are risk takers and Flo shares two of hers: “Petting an alligator on my first date with Cullen—I think I was trying to show off for him. The second was a trip to the Himalayas during medical school to provide medical care in remote parts of India.” Cullen adds, “For me, it was when I moved to a dangerous part of Honduras to work on pediatric AIDS research.”

As for feeling beautiful, Cullen jokes, “If that ever happens, I’ll let you know!” For Flo, “It’s when our son says ‘Mommy, you look beautiful.’ Cullen claims he’s an acquired taste, but Flo wholeheartedly disagrees, telling us, “Cullen is my rock and I don’t know where I’d be without his daily support. I cried for hours when he proposed.” Listing watching Flo starting down the aisle as his happiest memory, Cullen adds he’s also happy when their parents take the kids, allowing them a date night.

Cullen’s embarrassing moment? “I played Marley in ‘A Christmas Carol’ in elementary school. Certain I was going to be a huge star; I forgot every single line.”

Flo’s desert island must-haves? “A map, compass, and a boat, so I can get back to watching Downton Abbey and eating Sour Patch Kids.”

Pet peeves? Cullen? “When I’m exiting an elevator and people are rushing to get in. Also when Flo tells me how to drive.”

ISRAEL RODRIGUEZ

Ballet Master, videographer, and graphic designer at Mobile Ballet, Israel adores all of his job titles, but his favorite one is husband. Married to “my super-wife” Katia Garza, Mobile Ballet’s Artistic Director and choreographer, this dynamic duo is the heart and soul of the organization. “The best part of my job getting to do what  I love—teaching dance and filmmaking,” he says, adding, “In addition the Mobile Ballet, I’ve assisted with dance-related functions for the Boys and Girls Club as well as performed at the first Latin Festival in Mobile.”

Expressing himself through dance and graphic design, Israel digs deeper, telling us, “I’m a very positive person and I love bringing joy to others. Through my hobbies, my personality is evident; I love martial arts, video games, and action figure collecting.” Prizing honesty as one of his most important values, he relates, “I care deeply about sharing my passion for art and people, and I do my best to be honest in all my interactions.” This dovetails with his thoughts on beauty. “Beauty is an internal quality. I believe everyone has their own reasons to feel confident and beautiful. Personality is what makes someone truly beautiful. This is why honesty is so important—an honest person is a beautiful person.”

Anyone who’s met Israel will attest to his warm and cheerful personality, as well as his sense of humor. Reflecting on his happiest moments, he beams, “There are many happy moments in my life, but going to my country, Cuba, and seeing my mom and family laughing at my jokes is one of the most satisfying.”

Sharing a bit of his funny side, he recalls a childhood memory. “I’ve always been hyperactive and one time, I disappeared from the city. The police were searching for me everywhere. Finally, they came to the lagoon where I was playing. Knowing I was in trouble, I hid under the water. They were worried, but I couldn’t hold my breath for long and was forced to reveal my hiding spot. They brought me home and my family was relieved at first, but now they laugh at me,” he smiles.

Wrapping up our chat, Israel concludes, “For the last past four years, I have been part of Mobile Ballet’s family and that I feel truly blessed and happy to have recently signed a contract for a few more years with them. I love working here and I sincerely love Mobile.” And we love you right back, Israel.

First celebrity crush? “When I was about 5 or 6, I fell in love with ‘The Little Mermaid’—I thought the cartoon was real!”

ROBERT “ROBBIE” MCGHEE

Robbie has a big job. “As the elected Vice Chairman and Chief Governmental Affairs Officer of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians (PBCI), I serve our Tribe alongside the Tribal Chair and the Members of the Tribal Council. I represent the Tribe in state government, the US Congress, the White House, and Federal Agencies to enhance and protect our tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and economic development,” he shares.

Interestingly, PBCI is the only federally recognized Indian tribe in Alabama. A sovereign nation near Atmore for 200 years, they’ve contributed to countless projects benefiting Tribal Members and communities throughout the state and more importantly, our local Gulf Coast communities. “I’m fortunate that my career has afforded me the opportunity to meet Presidents, US Senators and Representatives, Governors, State and Local leaders and tribal leaders from the Indian Country,” he tells us.

Impressed, he adds, “Advocating for my Tribe, other tribal nations, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians at the highest level of government has been an honor. Serving at the Department of Interior, the US Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, and in the private governmental affairs sector has provided me with expertise on issues of tribal sovereignty, land, economic development, gaming and more.” He’s reluctant to spell it out, so we will—the Poarch Creek Indians and Wind Creek Casino matter.

Dedicated to service, Robbie explains, “President John F. Kennedy’s (and Spiderman’s!) quote ‘For of those to whom much is given, much is required’ has always inspired me. Blessed, I serve on boards such as Alabama Humanities Alliance, Alabama Children First, 2022 Real Men Wear Pink Campaign, Gulf Coast Exploreum, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, National Indian Child Welfare Association, Center for Native American Youth, Native American Rights Fund. and the USA Alumni Board.”

A downtown Mobilian, he shares, “I express my personality through clothing! I like casual looks with stylish accents—shoes, eyewear, and watches are critical! Yet I’m comfortable in flip-flops and ball caps, too. And I collect modern art from around the world to mix with traditional pottery, baskets, and cultural works.”

As for his heart? “My faith, family, friends, culture, and ancestors matter most. Raised by loving parents who instilled in my brother Daniel and me that we could accomplish anything, I constantly strive to be a role model for them and my people. Luckily, I also have extraordinary friends and we truly bring out the beauty in each other.”

Surprised to learn Robbie is sensitive, he concludes, “I hurt easily and do my best not to disappoint or hurt others, and I have high standards for that treatment in return. Simply put, I’m not naïve, I’m just amazed and humbled by the strength and beauty in others.”

Karaoke Favorite? “Neon Moon’ by Brooks & Dunn.”

Pet Peeve? “Slow drivers in the fast lane.”

ASHLEY COCHRAN

Fueled by passion to help others, Ashley spent years as a nurse in the NICU and now, as a clinical specialist for Axonics, Inc., she’s able to provide solutions for what ails over 50 million people.  “I have the pleasure of working with patients, physicians and their staff to provide support for devices used to treat bladder conditions,” she says, adding, “My job requires me to talk with patients about sensitive moments, like not being able to make it to the bathroom in time. An extremely difficult topic for patients to open up about, it’s my job to be compassionate and make them comfortable discussing the issues they’re experiencing.” A fan of organizations that provide medical care for others, she proudly supports St. Jude’s Children’s  Research Hospital, too.

On a lighter note, Ashley is a self-professed foodie and loves how fashion makes her feel. “I’m a sucker for clothes and I love shoes even more! I joke all the time that if I had unlimited funds, I’d be dangerous. When I receive compliments about an outfit, it’s a true confidence boost. I try to pay it forward, since a simple compliment may be the highlight of someone’s day! When I have the opportunity to dress up, I take full advantage, as I wear scrubs to work,” she laughs.

Her beauty secret? “I feel most beautiful when I’m rested and have a plan for the day. I value a good night’s sleep and a good nap on a Sunday afternoon!” Asked who makes her want to be a better person, she shares, “My daughter, Savannah, inspires me to be the best version of myself. My husband Geoffrey and I prayed for many years to become parents while facing infertility treatments. Now she’s my greatest joy and I strive to teach her how to be a loving and caring person. I want her to know she has the capability of being a female powerhouse and can do anything she puts her mind to.”

Celebrity Crush? “Tom Cruise! One of my favorite movies as a child was ‘Top Gun.’ My dad was a pilot in the Navy and I grew up watching the Blue Angels every year in Pensacola. I can’t wait to see the new sequel!”

Embarrassing moment? “Speaking from experience, never ask a pregnant woman when she’s due—she may have already had the baby!”

BLANE & AMANDA STOKLEY

If you haven’t met Blane and Amanda  yet, stop by either Stokley Nursery in Semmes or Garden Express in midtown Mobile. We promise you’ll come away with new friends, expert advice, and probably a car full of plants. Perfectly summing up this couple’s work ethic, Amanda says, “I don’t really have a job description; I just do what needs to be done.”

Parents to Maddie and Maddox, who, according to Amanda, make her feel beautiful, she says, “I’m happiest when I’m with my kids and they’re having a great time, which in turn makes me feel beautiful inside.” Blane secs her thoughts, telling us, “Spending quality time with my kids and having deep conversations with them is my favorite thing to do.”

Blane is inspired by his father. “The love my dad has shown his family is special. He worked hard for my mom, brother, and me, and managed to build something great for us and his grandkids,” he states. Amanda is inspired by her kids’ future and remains grateful for each moment with them, saying, “I’m pretty simple; I try not to take the little things for granted.”

This pair knows what’s important and they give back accordingly. Amanda shares, “We’re big supporters of Hope 41:10, Donna and Turner Ward’s foundation to help women who’ve had breast cancer. Blane adds, “Donna is a close family friend who’s been through so much and she’s still taking care of others. We also love helping Aubreigh’s Army. This one is near and dear to us because we lost such a beautiful and precious family member. Aubreigh is so loved and missed by everyone. They’re trying to reach as many people as possible to fund research for pediatric brain cancers like DIPG.”

Describing herself as low-key and a bit shy, the gorgeous Amanda loves animals (she has two dogs and a rabbit and wants more) and playing sports, especially volleyball. Her loved ones are more ebullient in their praise, noting, “She can be quiet at times, but she’s mostly kind, silly, and loving.” Blane is more outspoken, but he speaks for both of them, saying, “We care about others and help anyone who needs it.”

Amanda’s childhood nickname? “Everyone used to call me Lil’ Red because of my hair. They called my best friend Big Red because she was also a redhead and taller than me.”

Blane’s choice for karaoke? “I would sing ‘Amazing Grace’ because they’d need it if they heard my vocals.”

BRITTNEY CARDEN

Brittney is busy. As Specialty Pharmacy Manager at USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute, she manages the specialty pharmacy inside Mitchell Cancer Institute and oversees all patients on oral chemotherapy. She’s married to Andrew and they have two children, Anniston and Archer. She’s a board member with the Spanish Fort Education and Enrichment Foundation (SFEEF), and volunteers at 3Circle Church and her children’s schools as much as possible. We’re a little knackered merely listing her many career, family, and community engagements. Brittney, on the other hand, thrives on her bustling life.

Compassion is a hallmark of Brittney’s personality and is reflected in every aspect of her life. “I treat all of my patients as if they are family members. They’re going through one of the most difficult times in their lives, so I ensure they receive their oral chemotherapy as quickly and inexpensively as possible,” she claims. As an SFEEF board member, she says, “Education is extremely important to me. I want to be as involved with my children’s schools and being on the board allows to raise money and support for the schools system.” Same goes for her membership at 3Circle Church. “I love our church and volunteer there as much as I can,” she concludes.

Despite her on-the-go life, she prioritizes her family, friends, and her own self-care. Describing her passion for sports, she notes, “During childhood, my dream job was to be a sports analyst for Major League Baseball.” Going on, she smiles, saying, “I loved baseball so much I married a baseball coach!” Further? “I graduated from Auburn University and love all things Auburn! I love working out at Orangetheory Fitness and running with my friends. I also love traveling with my husband—Charleston, Atlanta, Auburn, and St. Augustine are some of my favorite places.” And the most daring thing she’s ever done? (It’s a whopper.) “I rappelled 20 stories down the Marriott in Mobile to raise money for a charity. It’s one of the craziest things I’ve ever done, especially since my 4-year-old daughter was watching. I was brave for her, but I was literally shaking!” On that note, we salute this top-to-bottom asset to our community.

Favorite childhood story? “I grew up on a small farm in Hartselle, Alabama, where we raised fainting goats. That’s always a good conversation starter!”

Pet peeve? “Double dipping—to avoid being grossed out, I  divide salsa or queso into individual bowls for my kids.”

JUSTIN LAW

Justin is on a mission to educate us all about our finances, telling us, “My purpose is to transform and evolve the conversations people have about their personal finances so I can help them achieve financial balance.” He has the heart of a teacher, making complex topics understandable and creating a safe, judgment-free space for his clients. “I help close gaps in financial knowledge, serve as a sounding board, and uncover any blind spots that may impact their present and future security,” he states. A Wealth Management Advisor at Strategic Wealth Advantage, he’s well aware of the psychological aspect of his work. He notes, “It’s fascinating seeing the different factors driving my clients’ decisions and actions.  I’m always learning and adapting in order to better mesh with my clients’ personality traits.”

Much more than his career, Justin is also committed to helping others. He’s a supporter of the Baller Dream Foundation. “This cause touches my heart with their focus on support and advocacy for young cancer patients,” he says. Further? “I’m very involved in Junior Achievement; I volunteer, going into classrooms to teach career skills and financial literacy.” This altruism not only benefits the recipients, but gratifies Justin, as well. “I gain fulfillment when I’m serving others. There’s nothing more empowering than seeing the success of those around you and knowing you had a small role in that success.”

Expressing his personality through fashion not only makes him stylish, it also cements Justin’s take on why clothes matter. “I’m a big proponent of dressing for success,” he says. “Your dress and fashion style are one of the most profound ways to make a first impression.” While he’s absolutely stylish, according to his girlfriend Nicole, “He has an outward persona of a Rottweiler while being a big teddy bear on the inside.” We told you he’s more than a money guy.

In fact, he’s recently taken up the “very challenging” game of golf. He tells us, “I made a friendly wager with a friend who claimed he could straight-up beat me while playing left-handed. Full of pride, I accepted the challenge, only to come up short on the course. Needless to say, golf is a humbling sport!” Three-putts aside, we’d still want Justin on our team.

First celebrity crush? “I grew up on ‘Saved By the Bell,’ so I was head-over-heels for Tiffani Amber Thiessen. Who didn’t love Kelly Kapowski?”

Go-to karaoke song? “I can belt out some ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ by Journey!”

ASHLEY SMITH

Family, faith, and fun top Ashley’s list of priorities. President of DocRx Wholesale Pharmacy, she relishes the growth the business has seen in her 11 years there. “When I started, it was just the CEO, another current coworker, and me. After years of hard work, we’ve grown into a company with almost 100 employees," she says proudly. DocRx's family-oriented workplace merges with Ashely's love of her own family as well.

When she’s not operating and growing DocRx, she spends her time playing sports with her two boys, Mason and Camden. Growing up with three brothers led to her love of sports, especially basketball, baseball, and football. Ashley also enjoys "playing the guitar and singing, going to the beach, shopping, traveling, working on film and entertainment sets, and spending time with friends and family."

Adoringly expressing her happiest memories, Ashley tells us, “The births of my sons! I struggled with infertility for years. Our two boys are miracles, and I will never forget the moments I finally held each of them in my arms. An equally happy memory is my wedding day—I got to marry my best friend, Brian.” While the couple may have different hobbies, such as Brian’s love for hunting and fishing and hers for shopping and playing music, she remarks, “We still make time to find things to enjoy together. We both love sports and traveling. It's fun because the loved ones in my two favorite memories now get to engage in these adventures and make new memories together!"

Yes, she’s physically fit, but she’s emotionally and mentally strong as well. Ashley candidly shares that she has "dealt with vision trouble, infertility, and other bumps along the way,” adding, “However, these trials only made me stronger and one day, I hope to use my story to help others." Her take on what makes someone beautiful is one we admire. "To me, a beautiful person is caring, compassionate, patient, and kind—someone who displays the fruits of the spirit in their life."

Embarrassing moment? “Waiting tables, a guest at a large table asked me what type of liver we served. I had to ask the manager and came back and confidently told them, ‘It’s cat liver.’ I’ll never forget the looks on the guests’ faces. My manager had said calf liver.”

Go-to karaoke song? “Nobody would guess this, but it’s Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Hair: Felisha Allen, Identity Salon, 251.478.2409. Makeup: Courtney Matthews Makeup Artistry, Cocokat1978@gmail.com Dress, $189; Dillard’s, 251.471.1551. Earrings, $35; The Holiday, 251.432.4911.

BRANDON F. BODIE, MD

Charismatic and engaging, Dr. Brandon Bodie is a sought-after internal medicine physician at Alabama Medical Group. Decidedly happy with his career choice, he says, “I have the privilege of working with people on prevention and treatment of medical pathologies. My patients are the best part of my job. Everyone I treat has a different story, a different background, and a different lens from which they view the world, not to mention
a different primary reason for coming into the office. There’s never a dull moment!”

Volunteering with Victory Health Partners also brings him joy. “I have known about this ministry since before I started my career in medicine, and it serves an important need in our community,” Dr. Bodie shares. In his free time, he loves being outdoors, smiling as he tells us, “I enjoy hiking, outdoor dining, and everything in between.” Add to that his love for cooking, but he’s quick to credit those who taught him, noting, “My most impressive kitchen feats have been under the tutelage of other people. I’m a self-identified sous chef!”

Affectionately called “goofy, quirky, and fun-loving” by those closest to him, he’s also unafraid to poke fun at himself. He recalls driving his girlfriend’s stick-shift car for the first time alone. “I stalled out three times in the middle of a neighborhood intersection less than a tenth of a mile from where I started. Some friendly neighbors eventually came to my rescue and walked me through the basics to get me back up and running,” he laughs.

Happiest when he’s traveling, Dr. Bodie claims, “One of the most exciting trips was going hiking and backpacking with a friend in 2018 for two weeks out west, including a four-day backpacking trip through Zion National Park.” But it’s more than the places he goes—it’s who’s with him. “Some of my most beautiful memories involve experiences with my loved ones on travels both near and far.”

Something you were very wrong about? “I believed maintaining a beautiful landscaped lawn would be easy and fun.”

Go-to karaoke song? Proud Mary—the Tina Turner version, naturally.”

VINCENT FONDE KILBORN III, ESQ.

Known as Vince, this nationally recognized trial lawyer could be a case study in how to live. Sharp is an understatement for this curious-minded, cigar-enjoying world problem solver. While debonair (and quite a gentleman), make no mistake, most trial lawyers dread facing him in court. Why? He’s been on a winning streak his entire career. From Walmart to Condé Nast, he gets justice for the little guy.

Sharing his good fortune with those less fortunate, Vince explains, “The Learning Tree is near and dear to my heart. A nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support services for children and young adults with developmental disabilities, they do incredible work and these children are a gift to humanity.”

A self-expression enthusiast, he shares, “I love beautiful things. From a Venetian chandelier to religious sculptures from India, my collections reflect my appreciation for the cultures and people I find interesting. On a recent visit to Rome, I fell for several lavender items, including the perfect Gucci sunglasses. The legendary Italian fashion houses like Givenchy and Fendi have survived due to the talent and creativity they curate and support. They’re a must-see!”

A true daredevil, Vince tells us, “I’ve spent my life thrill-seeking, including mountain and rock climbing in British Columbia; my favorite summit was Mount Athabasca. I’m a  trained glacier rescuer, I got into wire-walking, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, surfing Witch’s Rock in Costa Rica, and driving Formula 4 racecars at the Bondurant racetrack in Arizona. In Australia, I tried my hand at wild boar hunting, bull mustering in the outback, cage diving with great white sharks, and hang-gliding over the Great Barrier Reef in addition to 40 years of fishing for black marlin on the GBR.”

Having mastered mountains and marlin, he hasn’t escaped humility. “During a recent hurricane, I checked the generator and felt a sharp pain in my foot. Thinking I’d stepped on a stick, it turns out I ‘d been bitten by a cottonmouth moccasin snake. I survived and my contemporaries queried why the snake didn’t offer me professional courtesy,” he jokes. As for when he feels beautiful? “Standing in front of a jury and speaking from the heart. I really do have the best job in America.”

Pet peeve? “People who rely on social media to communicate with other humans.”

Relationship dealbreakers? “I haven’t found any yet.”

KRISTEN WOOD

Practice Manager at SWS Aesthetics, Kristen Wood encourages women to look and feel their best, saying, “I want every woman I encounter to leave our office stronger and more empowered in their bodies. Women’s health shouldn’t be taboo and needs to be discussed more openly. I want to help change that.”

No stranger to the difficulties of being a woman, Kristen gave birth to her daughter Eleanor three months before the pandemic shutdown. Postpartum anxiety set in while she was isolated. “I’ve discovered the more I take care of myself, the more I have to give my daughter. Society can make women feel that being stressed, tired, and run-down is the default setting for ‘good’ moms. I want to tell all new moms that is not the case! You only get one body and one mind and the more you take care of both, the happier everyone around you is.” Hard agreement from us. “Reflecting on the past two years, I realize I can be an amazing mom, wife, and employee all while taking time for my mental health,” she concludes.

Going full glam makes her feel beautiful. She tells us, “I want the eyelash extensions, spray tan, the whole nine yard. I love getting dolled up and going to dinner with my sweet husband, Ben.” Working for a cosmetic dermatologist for 12 years in Birmingham, Kristen grew to love and be comfortable in her own skin and also fell in love with the world of aesthetics, which has only grown as she’s worked with SWS Drs. McCool-Pearson and Guepet.

Now embracing the aging process, Kristen shares that she used to view getting older with negativity. “My grandmother would talk about hot flashes and night sweats as if they were inevitable. I had absolutely no idea about all the amazing options my generation has. From Botox to hormone replacement therapy to vaginal rejuvenation, I’m so glad we have these tools to help us embrace any age,” she says.

Desert island must-haves? “Sunscreen (duh), PJ Harlow pajamas so at least I can sleep in comfort, and Is bottomless wine an option?”

Nickname? “Birdie. My parents have called me this since I was an infant. No real story behind it but it stuck, which is ironic because I do not love birds at all.”

CHRISSY CLAY

With nothing short of infectious energy, Chrissy is the very definition of an entrepreneur moving on up. As a wife and mother, she’s got vision in spades. As the founder and owner of Gulf Shores’ hit Beach Girl Coffee, the cult-like following of her oh-so-stylish drive-thru says it all. With deluxe and delicious customizable coffees, teas, and more, her beverages can be as fancy or simple as each client desires. And the flavors? They range from white chocolate, bourbon caramel, toffee nut, toasted marshmallow, and Irish cream to coconut, lavender, rose, raspberry, and so much more. Also boasting frozen blends, kids go wild for the cotton candy and cake batter varieties.

Regarding self-expression, Chrissy shares, “My business is definitely an expression of me! I had a vision of all the things I love coming together as one fabulous brand and it’s been incredible watching it come to fruition, from the high-design building and drive-thru to the retro logo and merchandise. I get so much pleasure from working the window, talking to customers, and decorating the building each season. Beach Girl Coffee has been so well received, I recently expanded into a home décor store, Beach Girl at Home. I treasure making people smile with a cup of coffee or a special gift we’re delighted to help them pick out. I guess making people happy is how I express myself!”

As residents of Gulf Shores, she and her husband Andy donate to many charities, and since most of her staff attends the city’s public schools, she also contributes to the art and education foundation. Future charitable goals include helping the city get Waterway Village underway. “I think it’ll be a wonderful place with great shopping and dining opportunities—I’d love to be a part of the future development,” she adds.

With more than a full plate of franchising to-do’s, it’s her family that motivates her. Chrissy attests, “My husband pushes me to challenge myself in business and it’s made me stronger and more confident. I do this for my daughter;  I want to build something she can come home to and say, ‘That’s my family’s business.’ I’m also inspired by my mother’s drive and career accomplishments and want her to see me succeed!”

Biggest Dare? “Halloween Horror Night at Universal Studios—I hate scary things!”

Pet peeve? “People being mean to service industry workers.”

ANGELA WEIL

Asked when she feels beautiful, Angela cheekily replies, “In my pink zebra PJs!” Community service is something this fun-loving nominee takes seriously; she’s overflowing with purpose and seeks to make a local contribution in everything she does. “In addition to many women’s and business nonprofits, I support Catholic education and vocations because they’ve been very influential in my family’s lives. I’ve also dedicated a scholarship and granted a ‘Make-A-Wish’ in my father’s honor,” she shares, adding, “I have an affinity for grassroots organizations like Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre and The Haven. Beignet, my Goldendoodle, was the queen of The Haven’s recent MMOR parade!”

A self-professed serial entrepreneur, Angela brings the style as the co-owner of Stone Interiors with her husband Dustin Weil and Fairhope’s Interwoven, which she co-owns with her former assistant, Sadie Solberg. “I love bringing new opportunities to life in the development, construction, hospitality, and retail sectors and working with various artists to showcase their work through events at our home boutique, Interwoven,” she says.

Angela sees beauty everywhere she looks. ”I never stop creating and learning. My interests range from travel and history—Belgium, the Champagne region, and Sicily have been my favorites so far—to art, music, food, and wine,” she observes. But family means the most. “They’re my life and I’m happy when they’re happy. Special memories include traveling throughout Europe with my husband Dustin, accompanying my daughter Grace on her equestrian ventures, and enjoying ranch vacations with my son, John.”

Something you night not know about her? “I think chickens are so cool and wish more POA associations would allow them. I’ve raised several exotic breeds and I’m hoping to have some soon,” she notes. Also? “If money were no object, I’d develop an accredited program for kids interested in working in skilled trades to attend post-high school. Businesses desperately need skilled tradespeople who are willing to work hard.”

A hard worker herself, Angela shares the most daring thing she’s ever done was a cattle drive and that inauthenticity and name-dropping are her pet peeves. Fond of her humble nature, we’re nonetheless a bit jealous she went on the log ride at Disneyland with Screech and Mario Lopez from “Saved by the Bell” when she was 13.

Desert island must-haves? “Coffee, my black Chanel sunglasses, and a great French 75 cocktail!”

Something you were so wrong about? “The tragic bob haircut with bangs I wore in high school.”

PEARCE ALEXIS LAROUSSE

Conveying a natural warmth and graciousness, Pearce immediately insists we call her Lexie, as does everyone who knows (and loves) her. Along with her sparkling wit, it’s one of the first things you notice about her. I’ve always been the less serious, free-spirited friend and oddly, that has made people underestimate my intelligence. I love that I’m educated and always stay curious. It’s fine to be fun and silly, but it’s also a joy to be educated—don’t ever feel like you can’t be all the above!” Hear, hear, Lexie!

Describing herself, Lexie says, “If a homebody and a social butterfly had a baby, they’d get me! Some days I want to curl up with junk food and watch the Kardashians alone, but the other half of me can’t do enough. You suggest it, we’ll do it. Whether it’s a spur-of-the-moment vacation, shopping, driving by a friend’s ex-boyfriend’s house—may or may not be joking about that one—I am down, especially if it involves being outdoors.”

Working in Accounts Payable at Gulf Coast Auto Group is a perfect fit for her. “The car business is fast-paced and exciting,” she says, “We may have an audit, month-end reports, and a Porsche launch party all in one week, but that’s what makes work fun.”

Also a perfect match for Lexie? Her fiancé Luke Fincher. Smiling, she notes she feels beautiful when she’s with him, claiming, “I’ve never felt self-conscious or insecure with him. He ensures I know how loved, special, and beautiful I am.” Luke feels the same. Describing her, he says, “Lexie is supremely loveable. She loves everyone, but the love she has for people close to her is special. She’s fiercely loyal, honest to a fault, strong-willed, and stands up for what she believes in, but she always keeps an open mind when talking to those with different opinions.” See what we mean?

Recounting one of her family’s favorite stories about her childhood dreams, Lexie laughs, saying, “I was going be famous! When I was about 6–9 years old, every Friday we went to a small restaurant that had karaoke. They would cheer me on and let me sing all night. It was great until my friend recorded me so I could hear how I sounded—let’s just say I cried and never went back to karaoke.” We still applaud you, Lexie.

First celebrity crush? “Elvis Presley—since I was 6 years old. I got to go on a VIP tour of his house in second grade!”

Relationship dealbreakers? “Cheating, an ugly attitude, and anyone who doesn’t believe in carbs.”

WESLYN WALTERS

Vivacious, compassionate, and a performer at heart,  Weslyn sparkles from within. Striking the perfect balance of modern woman and country girl, we’re immediately captivated. Executive Operations Manager and Media Specialist at BelleFire Records, she’s had a lifelong passion for country music and singing, performing solo and even taking the amphitheater stage with Kelsea Ballerini when the artist opened for Keith Urban. Wow!

Weslyn gives back, volunteering as a chaperone for the Dogwood Trail Court. A 2015 Member, she says, “My time on the Court was an incredible and formative year in my life. I credit the organization with holding myself to a higher standard, something I’ve done ever since.”

Self-expression has never been a problem for Weslyn. She smiles, saying, “My closet is filled with sparkles, sequins, all the prints, and vibrant colors, which is on-brand for my personality. When people see me, I want them to see someone authentic to herself.” Describing her style as “denim and diamonds,” she loves her Southern roots but also appreciates the finer things in life.

Daughter (and lookalike) to Access darling Michelle Bigler, Weslyn cites her as her best friend. And Michelle taught her well. “Mom always said ‘Pretty is as pretty does,’ so I see beauty as an internal quality. I feel beautiful when I’m being completely genuine. That said, I still love some curls, a classic bold lip, and winged eyeliner,” she laughs.

Grateful for the advantages her life has offered her, Weslyn is nonetheless inspired by her past, telling us, “I’ve had amazing opportunities, but I’ve also gone through my share of hardships, expanding my heart and empathy. I’m always striving to do and be better—I’m lucky my mom is there when I need to lean into her for guidance and honesty.”

Her pride and joy, little brother Max “is the coolest 9-year-old I’ve ever met and is my little buddy! After a brain injury at birth, my family’s eyes were opened to a new world of increased patience, therapies, and lots of love. We also saw how the rest of the world reacts to the special needs community. There needs to be more awareness, open dialogue, patience, understanding—just a whole lot more of a whole lot!” she exclaims. Hear, hear, Weslyn!

Desert island must-haves? “A helicopter, a pilot, and something to read on the way home!”

Favorite food? “Foosackly’s! I’m the Chicken Finger Queen. And their ranch is homemade—win-win!”

JENNIFER & HUGH LOPES

Talk about an origin story! Both Jennifer and Hugh attended the University of South Alabama but didn’t know each other. One day, Hugh saw her across the cafeteria and told friends he was with that she would be his wife. Fast-forward to today and here they are, happily married with two grown children, Naomi Lopes Mann and Caleb Lopes, and grandchildren, as well. Both wildly successful in their careers, Jennifer is the American Cancer Society (ACS) Senior Development Manager, South Region, where she says, “I’m a Distinguished Events and philanthropy specialist. I design amazing events for very special causes. I love helping people achieve their philanthropic goals.” Hugh is a highly esteemed educator and Professional Hitting Instructor for baseball players and claims, “There’s nothing better than seeing a transformation in hearts and lives through athletics, because I’m a life coach and mentor, not just a talent and skill builder.”

This power couple is so much more than their careers—they’re also heavily involved in numerous other causes and their community. Jennifer’s favorite event to plan? “An anti-human trafficking event with Major League Baseball (MLB). We had 50,000 fans at Anaheim Angels’ Stadium and my performer was Nick Jonas. Trafficking survivors told their courageous stories before the after-game concert.” Hugh adds, “My wife and I are also tour guides in Israel and lead people on journeys to the Holy Land. We learned the value of the family dinner through Shabbat and enjoy hosting people for Shabbat on Friday nights.”

Inspired by each other, their family, and their faith, their priorities are clearly in order. An example? Hugh was well on his way to a career in MLB when Jennifer became pregnant. He chose not to pursue that career so he could be present for his growing family, and he doesn’t regret it for a moment. Their son Caleb took up the sport and they are proud to have cheered him on when he played for the St. Louis Cardinals. Jennifer’s faith was deepened when she received a cancer diagnosis and she was almost simultaneously offered a position with the ACS. “I considered the timing of the diagnosis and the job offer from ACS a sign that this was where I was meant to be,” she shares. We agree and celebrate this beautiful couple’s unwavering commitment to each other, their family, their faith, and to making the world a better place.

Jennifer’s phobia? “Lizards! Once, when I was in Curaçao, a lizard dropped from the roof of the shower onto me.”

Hugh’s phobia? “Heights—unfortunately, I learned this while on a rope challenge and couldn’t move from point A to point B.”

CASSAUNDRA INGE BURKS & WILLIAM L. BURKS IV

Cassaundra and her oldest son, William IV have a special bond, as does the entire family, including patriarch William Louis Burks III and siblings Jewel, Patrick, and Preston. Both successful—Cassaundra is a Private Banking VP with Renasant Bank (and former Access cover girl!) and William is well on his way, having graduated from Talladega College and attending Old Dominion University this fall for his master’s in chemistry and biochemistry.

Both with a need to give back, Cassaundra serves as a leader for 10 different charitable and civic organizations, explaining, “Representation matters! My presence serves as an example that people who look like me are of equal significance and value.” William is following in her footsteps as a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., helping students with ACT prep, volunteering in the medicinal garden at The Mobile Medical Museum, and at the Optimist Boys and Girls Club in their art room “Striving to be an artist, I get to hone my skills while helping the next generation,” he smiles.

Expressing themselves comes easy. William claims, “I love to paint, watch anime, and play guitar—they make me feel like I’m in my own world.” Cassaundra is a collector of many things like cowboy boots, teapots, guitars and fruit trees. She’s also a jewelry designer, noting, “With assistance from the crew at Knot Just Beads, I designed or made most of the necklaces I wear!”

Cassaundra draws inspiration from a deep well of gratitude, sharing, “My family, ancestors, culture, and community inform my goal of leaving everything a little better than I found it.” A continuous learner, she’s passed these traits on to William. Also inspired by his family, he adds, “I’m excited by what the future holds, so I stay at the top of my game in all aspects.”

How they differ? Their outward personalities. Cassaundra is here for everything and is an outspoken advocate for herself and any person or issue she cares about. Even as a child, she tells us, “My mother always shared stories about knowing I’d be a handful when I refused to take off my red cowboy boots as a toddler—I’m still that girl!” William is a bit more reserved with a wry sense of humor, but his optimism shines through when he talks about his respect for science and natual remedies. “An aspiring artist, I can’t wait to see my art everywhere!” We can’t either, William.

Cassaundra’s go-to karaoke song? “’Proud Mary’ by Tina Turner.”

William’s pet peeve? “People smacking while they eat. It drives me crazy!”

LANCE & GERRI MACH HALLMARK

Ever the purveyors of getting it right when it comes to delicious, belly-filling meals tied to an interactive experience, Lance and Gerri did just that as the owners and founders Rock N Roll Sushi. Ready to knock their next venture out of the park, Vandals Street Kitchen promises street food flavors from all over the world, and they’re also partners in downtown’s West Food Bar.

This duo not only loves the glam life they’ve worked hard to create, they give back to the community. From the Ronald McDonald House to the Mobile Humane Society, the couple also helps local Individuals facing challenging circumstances. Gerri claims, “It feels good to give back and form relationships with wonderful people.”

Gerri feels most beautiful “when I feel confident in my own skin,” she says, adding, “Also, when people compliment my character; once you focus on your inner beauty and talk positively to yourself, your outer beauty will shine through.” Lance jokingly adds he feels beautiful “after a few shots of jack Daniels.” See why we love them?

The couple’s true happiness lies in family. “I’m Inspired by Lance, our son, and my parents,” Gerri shares. Lance agrees, adding, “The day our son was born is my most cherished memory. Now 6 years old, he’s my reason for everything, but Gerri is my biggest source of inspiration. She holds me accountable when I try to get lazy and always pushes me to go further.”

Addressing his fears, Lance notes, “I used to be terrified of failing. I finally understand a failure only means I’m trying new and innovative things. Being too critical results in people being less creative for fear of being judged for failure.” Embracing risk with an idea and a lot of hope, Gerri and Lance opened their first Rock N Roll Sushi in 2010. Today, they own and operate five restaurants, have franchised 56 locations with—wait for it—plans to roll out 500 new locations nationwide. “There were a lot of hurdles opening that first restaurant, so it’s even more rewarding it’s grown so much over the years,” Gerri beams.

For Lance, self-expression comes in many forms. ”From my old-school car collection, tattoos, and our restaurant brands, I definitely blend my personality into the atmosphere and vibe.” Gerri adds, “I’m obsessed with fashion and food! You can tell a lot about someone by their outfits and how adventurous they are with the foods they eat or are willing to try.” Lastly, Gerri adores creating a concept from scratch and Lance admits he gets possessed when it comes to goals, concluding, “It’s all worth it to watch guests enjoy something we’ve poured our hearts into creating.”

Lance’s dream? “I want to climb Mount Everest!”

Gerri’s nickname? “Ling Ling! My Asian name is Ling and my family always says, ‘Ling Ling, you forgot your bling bling!’” after The Hot Chick movie.”

Most daring thing you’ve done? Gerri: “An open water dive with 20-plus sharks in Bimini.” Lance: “Getting fired from my job and starting Rock N Roll Sushi.”

BAILEY LULOFF

A Licensed Esthetician at USA Health Facial Plastic Surgery and Dr. Kimberly Donnellan Skin & Laser Center, Bailey provides services including waxing, tinting, dermaplaning, chemical peels, hydrafacials, microneedling, and laser treatments. While she excels at the technical aspects of her job—winning the last year’s Nappie Award for Best Esthetician for Mobile and Baldwin Counties—it’s being a part of someone feeling better about themselves that makes her happiest. “I'm fortunate to assist Dr. Donnellan with her cosmetic injections, procedures, and fractional laser treatments. It’s truly humbling to be able to transform someone's insecurities and watch them glow after doing so!” she shares. Another favorite? She laughs, saying, “Performing extractions, AKA pimple popping—it’s so gratifying.”

Apart from her extremely rewarding career, Bailey describes her personality, asserting, “I’d say that in general, I have an uplifting spirit. I thrive on encouraging others to do what makes them happy and healthy. Personally, I love to do anything involving being active, whether it’s sports, skating, swimming, hiking, or lifting weights. In her free time? “I love to travel, see new places, and meet new people, although I’m told I never meet a stranger,” she smiles. “I love laughing and making others laugh—it's good for the soul!”

Bailey feels most beautiful “every day, just as I am; happy, healthy, and successful. As I’ve gotten older, working in esthetics has taught me the importance of taking care of my skin. I’ve realized you don’t need layers of makeup to feel beautiful,” she claims. She might not wear much of it, but she’s also really talented at doing hair and makeup, so much so that she volunteered in that capacity for two years with Mobile Fashion Week.

Asked a moment she was embarrassed, she instantly offers one up, not only because she can, but also in the hopes someone else will learn from it. “Fresh out of esthetics school, I was having a consultation with two women. I assumed they were mother and daughter—I was wrong. They were sisters and they were not nice after that, so I learned early in my career to never assume.” We consider this excellent life advice, as well, Bailey.

First celebrity crush? “Nick Carter from Backstreet Boys!”

Favorite food? “Mexican! I could quite possibly eat it every day. Tacos and a margarita? Name a better combo.”

TAYLOR A. PILGER

Keeping up with Taylor is not for the faint of heart—she’s absolutely living her (busy) life at full-speed. A real estate closing attorney at Pilger Title Company, the biggest title company in Mississippi, she’s proud to be working at their first office in Alabama, located in the SanRoc Cay Marina in Orange Beach. “We specialize in all things real estate,” she says, adding, “The market is constantly evolving. No transaction is the same and getting to work with a variety of people keeps my job interesting.”

Taylor gives back as an active member of Junior Auxiliary of Biloxi-Ocean Springs, serving children all along the Gulf Coast. She’s very involved with Mississippi Mardi Gras, telling us, “I’m an active member of multiple carnival associations including the Krewe of Athena, Krewe of Bonne Vivantes, Krewe of Hera, and was a past Queen for the Krewe of Neptune.” She’ll fit right in here, we think.

Expressing her personality in many ways, chief among them is her love for planning parties. “I’m a festive person and always volunteer to host. I love an excuse to be a little ‘extra’ when it comes to a theme, decorations, cocktails, and more,” she says. Add in her love of doing things for others and making loved ones feel special. “Gift giving is one of my favorite things to do, whether it’s a small happy or an extravagant splurge.”

Her job puts her squarely where she wants to be—on the water. “Growing up on the Gulf Coast, I took it for granted, but after living in north Mississippi for college at Mississippi State University and law school at Mississippi College School of Law (she was first in her class), I now know how lucky I was to grow up on the water,” she claims.

Regarding beauty (and she is one), Taylor feel most beautiful “when someone compliments my character. I’m a big believer that one’s inner beauty emphasizes outer beauty.” Her large family is her inspiration. “I have a father and four older brothers who are all very successful entrepreneurs and business owners. Their level of success, determination, and hard work inspires me to try to live up to that, as well.” We welcome the addition of Taylor to our beautiful shores.

Desert island must-haves? “Good sunblock, a fishing pole, and a Jalapeno Margarita.”

Most daring thing you’ve done? “Travel to Paris alone with my best friend the summer after graduating high school—despite having seen the move Taken.”

C. ALEX WILES, MD

Once you’ve met him, it’s easy to grasp why Dr. C. Alex Wiles has a thriving internal medicine practice at Alabama Medical Group. He’s whip-smart, kindhearted, and he not only treats his patients, he ensures they understand their diagnosis and treatment plans. Graduating first in his class from USA’s College of Medicine, he went on to complete his residency at the prestigious Vanderbilt University. Regarding his career, he says, “The most interesting aspect of my job is the patients I see. I have the opportunity to meet new people every day and the relationships I make with patients are what make my work interesting and fun.”

Citing his parents as his inspiration, he adds, “My dad is a physician and my mom is a teacher—my daily work is inspired by both of them. There’s nothing more rewarding than helping someone by giving them new information or a new skill to use. I’ve always had a passion for teaching and I try to incorporate that into my practice by educating patients about their conditions or illnesses.”

His love for his wife Lindsey and newborn daughter Madelyn is obvious. Asked when he’s happiest, he beams, saying, “I truly enjoy traveling with my wife—anywhere with a beach, near or far. I’m excited at the prospect of traveling as a family from now on.” And Lindsey, his family, and friends are all the beneficiaries of his passion for cooking. He shares, “I love cooking for everyone. The entire process allows for a lot of creativity and sharing the finished product with others makes it all worthwhile. I try not to follow recipes; the fun of it is finding ways to make it my own.” A caring physician, an innate teacher, a loving son, husband and father, and a great cook? Our community definitely lucked out with Dr. Wiles!

Pet peeve? “Every Mobilian’s pet peeve—slowing down in the tunnel.”

Desert island must-haves? “A grill to cook with, an umbrella to enjoy the beach, and an airplane to leave when I’m ready.”

MARY DUNLAP WELLS MD, FACOG

As a successful surgeon with a new aesthetic business, Mary’s message is clear. “I’m not retiring from Fairhope Gynecology and Obstetrics (FGO) any time soon!” she exclaims. Perhaps the concern comes from fans who are wondering how she does it? Not only mom to Drew, Amelia, and Wesley and wife to fellow FGO partner, Dylan, Mary is a board-certified OB/GYN who performs surgeries, delivers babies, and more. She’s also a partner in the new hit aesthetics practice MD Aesthetics of Mobile Bay with Dr. Dusty Smith, where they help patients age gracefully with skincare routines, injections, and more.

Philanthropic, she shares, “My daughter Amelia and I volunteer for the National Charity League. We’ve helped various organizations from the American Heart Association to the Rotary Youth Club. However, Prodisee Pantry and Family Promise have touched me since there are so many families without food or a home in Baldwin County; they need support. It’s important for me to teach giving back to my children and I feel strongly that to those who have been given much, much is to be expected.”

When it comes to self-expression, Mary says, “I love potted plants! I love orchids and keeping them blooming is such an achievement. I’m also a voracious reader and cooking for my family and friends is my love language. But I truly feel the most beautiful when I get to dress up and go out with my sweet husband!”

As for a learning moment? “I worked crazy hours in residency training. Chronically tired, I remember pregnant women saying how tired they were. I’d think, ‘Try working as an OB resident!’ Then I became pregnant during an easy rotation, and I was a tired like no other tired. It was humbling to learn what our bodies go through to have a baby,” she explains.

From family time on the slopes to being there for someone’s happiest day by delivering their baby or erasing years with an aesthetic treatment, Mary’s grateful, sharing, “I get to see women throughout their entire lives and that evolves into real relationships which truly bring me joy.”

Pet peeve? “My children leaving empty boxes in the pantry or freezer. I tell them I’m going to wrap them as their Christmas presents!”

First celebrity crush? “Shaun Cassidy! You opened his Born Late album and there was his picture.”

CARRIE & MARY KENDALL COX

True partners in life, if not in their separate (and successful) businesses, both Carrie and Mary Kendall confirm their relationship is key to all aspects of their happy lives. Moms to Maggie, 16, and Sadie, 13, Carrie is Founder and Owner of Crew Fitness (now with three locations). She says, “We’re still a small business, meaning I make all major decisions for each location and also mop the floor and do everything in between. I have a great team, but as any small business owner knows—you just do it all.” Owner of Bella Bridesmaids Mobile, Mary Kendall is laser-focused on client satisfaction, telling us, “We work by appointment only, so we deliver a full service-oriented experience to our brides. When a bride books an appointment, the showroom is all hers and I work with her to find the perfect bridesmaids’ dresses.”

The couple relishes the satisfaction of helping others. For Carrie? “I love teaching people fitness can be fun and more importantly, it can be transformational; they feel strong and they feel good, and I get to be part of that.” Mary Kendall is thrilled when a bridal party adores their gowns, but also has a soft spot for Mardi Gras. “I love to help Court Members find a great simple gown they can have their own designer customize, making it their own,” she remarks.

Further, Mary Kendall serves on the board of the Downtown Alliance’s Urban Emporium and Carrie supports Young Life Mobile in their mission of meeting teens where they are and sharing Jesus with them.

Mary Kendall’s love language is hosting and making their home a place we’d all want to live. “I love hosting our friends and family, spending time with loved ones. I especially love hosting just our family. I light the tapers every night and always have fresh flowers. One of my favorite things in the world is a full table in our home,” she smiles.

Carries feels most beautiful “when Mary Kendall is by my side,” adding, “She sees the absolute best in a person and then accepts nothing less from them, always in the sweetest, most encouraging way imaginable. This has had a profound effect on my life. I’ve never worked harder, accomplished more, and felt so fulfilled.” With that testament, we offer a heartfelt salute to this fantastic couple.

Carrie’s first celebrity crush? “Zack Morris and Lisa Turtle from Saved By The Bell!”

Mary Kendall’s go-to karaoke song? “’Ready to Run’ by The Chicks.”

When it comes to feeling beautiful himself, he tells us, “I’ve never considered myself physically beautiful, but I do feel better about myself when I’m exercising at the gym. Spiritually speaking, I probably feel the most beautiful in my heart when I’m cheerfully giving to others.” As for what inspires his kindness? “I would have to say Jesus Christ—He always has my back and is there to pick me up,” he exclaims.

Listing loyalty as a trait some might not know, Donnie jokes, “My friends and family think I’m a little crazy for being so loyal, but it’s just me! My wife says I’m an easy-going, non-confrontational perfectionist and that I always see the best in people.” Proving his loyalty, he shares, “Watching my daughter’s birth is my happiest memory. Thinking of that day always brings tears to my eyes—even now and she’s 25 years old!” Inquiring about something he got wrong, he tells us, “If anyone told me I’d be where I am today 25 years ago, I would have told them they were crazy!”

Go-to karaoke song? “Most definitely Elton John, with ABBA is a close second.”

Nickname? “’Rootabegger. When I was young, my father called me Rootabegger because he said I was always rooting into everything and begging for everything so he nicknamed me Rootabegger!”

MATT & AMY MCDONALD

Starting their business from a spare bedroom, today Matt and Amy McDonald are the embodiment of success, owning of several pharmaceutical companies in Baldwin County. While they’re proud of their hard-won achievements, the couple is similarly gratified their success allows them to help others. Amy is on the National Charity League board, a mother-daughter volunteer philanthropy organization that gives back to the community. “She loves showing our daughters; Abby, 15, and Avery, 11, the joy that giving and helping in the community can bring,” Matt beams. They are also members of City Hope Church, where both are heavily involved in their Kingdom Building projects for local and global expansion of outreach, including  sending out missionaries, caring for the poor, and planting new churches across the globe. They support other causes too numerous to mention her here for lack of space.

When not being absolute saints to their community, Matt and Amy spend their time on the go. True Alabamians, Amy says, “We love to travel, go offshore fishing, play golf, and attend Auburn football games. Matt also loves to hunt and work at our camp and spends the summers  participating in the Blue Marlin Championship fishing circuit. We both love to fish for marlin and everyone in our family has caught one!”

Loved ones describe Amy as very easy-going, caring, honest, and kind. Always wanting the best for others and treating people the way she wants to be treated, she treasures her close-knit friends, telling us, “I’m blessed to be surrounded by an amazing circle of friends who lift you up and make you feel good about yourself no matter what you are going through.”

Matt confesses he feels his best when giving back to others. “Amy and I understand we have been blessed and love to give back to those in need,” he shares. Those closest to him describe Matt as “loving and caring, but he also can come off a little strong.“ Matt’s response? “It’s funny, but I agree that I can be difficult. I have a strong personality that can be taken harshly, but I truly care for everyone and everything in my life and have a very giving spirit.”

Matt’s phobia? “Snakes!! I have many stories, including my friends putting one in my golf cart while playing. I literally ran out of my shoe running from it!”

Amy’s go-to karaoke song? “It’s hard to say because I was definitely not blessed with a singing voice, but if I had to choose, I’d go with “Bust a Move” by Young MC.”

SYDNEY WASDIN, M.ED., ALC, NCC, RYT

Clearly a bombshell, Sydney is far more interested in looking inward. Exceptionally intelligent (See all those letters above?) and a straight-talking advocate for mental health, one discussion with her will change your mindset regarding the mind-body connection. Founder, Clinical Therapist, and yoga instructor at True Yoga + Therapy, she explains, “We use an integrative care perspective to help people, offering counseling support, nutrition counseling with a licensed dietician, group activities, and yoga classes for mind-body benefits. We help people better learn about and care for their bodies, which allows for their mind and body to better work together for improved health and happiness.”

In addition to her thriving practice, Sydney is a Young Professionals Board member with the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce and her business provides counseling services to a local nonprofit, Flourish, which provides group  support and mentoring for at-risk teen girls.

Expressing her personality through fashion, Sydney also uses it as a challenge to embrace herself and her body. It’s easy to forget the person helping you is also facing their own problems. Elaborating, she says, “I’m not perfect. I know struggle and experience stress and everyday challenges. I’m still learning about my body and myself every day and I work to maintain healthy habits—but I’m also very intentional about ‘practicing what I preach’ because I value authenticity above all.”

Sydney also has an adventurous side—she loves scuba diving and has gone 99 feet down (her certificate allows 100). She’s also unafraid to laugh at herself, telling us, “At my first job after grad school, I worked at a large, prestigious day school in Atlanta as an Upper School Counselor. One day during lunch, I slipped on the stairs leading down to the lunch room and fell flat on my face in front of all the students and faculty. It was that embarrassing high school moment you remember forever, but as a 24-year-old faculty member. I laughed at myself as I got up and I’m hopeful it made me more approachable to some kids there.”

Favorite childhood story? “I was angry at my grandfather as a kindergartener and told the teacher in the car line I didn’t know him. He had to park and go to the office to show his ID to pick me up—it was an awkward car ride to grandma’s that day.”

First celebrity crush? “I’m from the Aaron Carter era, so that was my first crush, but my feelings were much stronger for Channing Tatum.”

JUSTIN DUBYAK

Strolling the aisles of Dillard’s in Mobile for the latest in fashion is a cherished tradition, and Store Manager Justin Dubyak is not only delighted to have us, but knows just how the newest styles are chosen. He tells us, “The most interesting thing about my job is how technology has become so incorporated into every facet of the business, from logistics all the way to shopping trends. We rely on technology to collect endless amounts of data points and develop them into reports enabling us to make decisions that affect the business today as well as in the future.”

While he loves his job, Justin remains well-rounded. He is an avid outdoorsman and enjoys fishing and hunting. “The quietness of the woods and the tranquility of the ocean really bring me peace. It’s a way to decompress and unplug. The natural beauty South Alabama has to offer is immense and I still have plenty more to explore,” he says. “I’m happy when I’m on my boat with friends and family. I look to my parents for inspiration daily. They’ve been together over 51 years. They care for and about each other selflessly and are a true gift to anyone who knows them,” he adds.

Lastly, we get to Justin’s charitable heart, the center of which is the Ronald McDonald House. “While in college at the University of Florida, I was a member of the Psi Chi International Honor Society, and we’d cook dinner for the visiting families at the Ronald McDonald House at least twice monthly while their children were being cared for at UF Shands Hospital,” he says. Further, “I’m very proud to be working with Dillard’s, which sells Southern Living Cookbooks during the Christmas season every year and 100% of the proceeds go to local Houses. In 2019, I presented a check for close to $10,000 to the one in Mobile.” A board member for the Little Black Dress Event, which raises money for the charity, he laments the past few years’ events being canceled due to the pandemic, but says, “When we do have it again, we’re going to have a record year!”

Most daring things you’ve done? “I have a need for speed—I’ve driven a car at 150 mph, a motorcycle at 120 mph, a snow mobile at 90 mph, and  a wave runner at 75 mph.”

Any phobias? “None, unless you count spiders being on me.”

SUNTREASE WILLIAMS-MAYNARD

Meet Super Woman! Wife to Stephen and mother to Dareon and Destiny, Suntrease serves as Special Counsel at Adams and Reese LLP. She handles workplace matters ranging from investigations to policy review, development and training for Equal Employment Opportunity compliance, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, team building and more.

A Major in the US Air Force Reserve, she’s served under the Air Education & Training and the Special Operations Commands as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate, where she provides legal services to active duty members and retirees. More? She’s an Adjunct Professor at Spring Hill College, where she teaches a curriculum that she developed in sociology and criminology. Even more? She serves as a Teen Court Judge in Escambia County.

As President of The Maynard 4 Foundation, we applaud Suntrease for her creation of the Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageantry program soon happening in Mobile to mark the Foundation’s anniversary. The program aims to not only highlight the young ladies’ accomplishments, it will help develop confidence, minimize stereotypes, and foster an understanding of their culture and history.

The ultimate servant, Suntrease developed her first organization in the eighth grade and has been serving ever since! From Chair to board member of various organizations, her philanthropic efforts include the Boy Scouts of America, Bishop State Community College Foundation, Rotary Club, Big Brother Big Sister of South Alabama, and more. Suntrease is also a member of legal associations like the Mobile Bar Association, National Bar Association, Inns of Court (Paul W. Brock), and the Black Women Lawyers Association of Alabama. We need a nap. Wow!

Personally speaking, she adds, “I’m a simple lady. The makeup for the photoshoot was fun, but I usually don’t wear any! Okay, maybe lip gloss when I’m feeling fancy. I really feel the most beautiful when my husband gives me a good morning kiss on the forehead—that’s all I need!”

As for inspiration?I’m always inspired to improve for my family – they’re my best friends – we are truly the Maynard 4. My grandmother, however, was my earthly She-ro. Now as my heavenly angel, it’s important her legacy lives through me. She didn’t have a high school diploma, but she had an unmatched degree of wisdom,” Suntrease beams.

 Nicknames? Sweetie Bee and Sunny

What were you so very wrong about? “Alabama before visiting! One of the most beautiful states and alphabetically first, cheers to the ‘A’ state!”

SUZANNE DONAGHEY

Dedicated to her career as Director of Human Resources at Gulf Distributing Company, Suzanne is proud to work with her team to enhance the company’s culture and the experience of their employees along with her regular HR duties. She’s equally passionate about her involvement within the community, telling us, “I volunteer as a mentor as well a member of the Advisory Council with Flourish, a nonprofit in Daphne offering a free community space to equip and empower teen girls. I was also part of the MS Leadership Class of 2021, where we raised money to fund research hopefully leading to a cure Multiple Sclerosis.”

Then there’s her absolute passion—Henry, her 7-year-old Golden Retriever. Asked if Henry counts as family, we unequivocally accept that as fact. Loved ones describe her as witty, someone they can always count to be there, and—you guessed it—obsessed with her dog. Aside from Henry, many things bring Suzanne joy. She says, “Whether it’s decorating my house, wearing fun clothes, traveling, going out with friends , or getting involved throughout the community, I try to keep a balance of classy and sassy!”

Her inspiration? “My mother, Joanne. She’s the most selfless and kind person I know. She constantly goes above and beyond for anyone she knows!” Stating she feels beautiful “when I’m laughing and having a good time with family and friends,” she adds, “My happy place is watching the sunset at our house on Weeks Bay with family, friends, and Henry.”

Suzanne keeps it hidden most of the time but she does have an adventurous streak. “I went on vacation to Sun Valley, Idaho, to visit some friends living there. The skiing was so good, I canceled my flight home and stayed in Sun Valley! I ended up living between Sun Valley and Denver, Colorado, for the next five years,” she shares, laughing. “I’ve been back in Mobile for six years now, but my dad still considers me a ‘flight risk’ when I go on vacation.” We’re glad that in the end, she chose our powder-white beaches over the powder-covered mountains.

Embarrassing moment? “My best friend growing up, Neill Lenaghan, had a cute little bowl haircut. When we were two years old, we decided he should cut off all my hair to match his. No clue how we ended up alone with scissors!”

Desert island must-haves? “Peanut butter, my Weezie robe, Chapstick, and my dog, Henry.”

REBECCA LYNN WALTER

Coastal through and through, Rebecca Walter is the Banquet Manager at the Original Oyster House, accompanying clients every step of the way, from checking date availability to the final menu selection. Rebecca says the most exciting part of her job is “all the different people I get to talk to while helping them plan their events!” She adds, “ Some clients are from the other side of the United States and sometimes it’s all the siblings planning a party for their parents, so I feel like I know the whole family before the event even begins! I also love seeing clients get creative and transform our room to match their event.” Fun fact? She’s been with the company since 2010, starting as a hostess and moving up the ranks since then. Talk about loyalty to a great business!

Outside of work, Rebecca revels in the Gulf Coast sun, telling us she feels beautiful when she’s on or around the water. “I could have salty hair thrown up in a messy bun, but nothing beats being with your people on our turquoise shoreline with the sun glowing on you!” But she never comes unprepared. She’s considered the mom of the group and proclaims, “I’ll be there for you whether you need a ride, a friend, or stick of gum!”

Luckily, she loves to travel. “My friends and family are spread out hundreds and even thousands of miles away, so we’re always visiting someone or a new place none of us have been to before,” she smiles. Also a lover of Mardi Gras, she shares, “I joined Apollo’s Mystic Ladies in 2019 and I’ve been involved since day one, serving on multiple committees and was even elected float captain the first year I was eligible!” Rebecca also gives back, volunteering as a Visit Mobile Tourism Ambassador and a member of the Explore Eastern Shore Tourism Society.

We’re tired just thinking of how busy she is, but we definitely have enough energy to be grateful our community has a cheerleader like Rebecca.

Go-to karaoke song? “I avoid karaoke, but won’t pass up Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody.’”

Any phobias? “Lightning—I absolutely hate it. One time in high school, I was hosting at the Original Oyster House and the lighting was so bad I had to go sit in a room with no windows!”

Hair: Felisha Allen, Identity Salon, 251.478.2409. Makeup: Ashley West, AshleyWestMua.com, 251.270.1213. Dress, $89, Dillard’s, 251.471.1551. Earrings, $96; Stephanie’s Downtown, 251.270.7001.

AMBER CHERRY

Prior to becoming a master aesthetician, Amber served her country driving trucks in the US Army for eight years and is a self-professed adrenaline junkie. As mom to Persephone, 14, and Beni, 11, she earned the nickname Evel Knievel after the iconic stunt performer when she tried to jump an irrigation canal on her three-wheeler as a kid (it didn’t go well). Bungee jumping, motorcycle riding and skydiving aside, Amber feels most beautiful when her freedom and independence are booming. Fearless, she even challenges herself to tasks like replacing her garbage disposal.

However, what drives her is simply making others feel good about themselves. “As the Director of Aesthetic Services and Master Aesthetician at Mobile’s Synergy MedAesthetics, I ensure patient satisfaction from the moment clients walk in to the moment they leave. In addition to providing top-notch age-defying treatments that deliver incredible, natural-looking results, making a lasting impression is my top priority. Whether it’s injectables, cellulite treatment, or body sculpting, I love using my artistic skills in tandem with all science has to offer. It’s exhilarating to me! Nonetheless, our patients are by far the most interesting part of my job!” she exclaims.

Outside of work, Amber is an outdoor enthusiast, sharing, “I’m happiest being in nature with my kids. Nothing makes my spirit soar more than being in the mountains (Mount Rainier is my happy place). I’m literally on cloud nine when sharing a good hike or climb outdoors with my children. I also love all 17 of my precious house plants—I’m a forest fanatic and want my house to resemble one!” she jokes.

New to the area, Amber is getting to know the various charitable organizations and has a keen interest in children’s education, health, and well-being. Asked something  she was so very wrong about, she quickly quips, “Parenting! There’s the idea of ‘I would ‘never’ or ‘I will ‘always’ (fill in the blank with whatever I had an opinion on) before having children. But I can testify that yes, you will and no, you won’t! It’s not perfect and it can be a mess, but it’s beautifully imperfect.” As parents ourselves, we second her emotion.

Nickname? “Cherry! It’s my last name and it’s catchy.”

Embarrassing moment? “My phone’s always on vibrate. I was in a consultation and the client’s phone rang repeatedly. I told her to she can answer it if she needs to, and she replied it wasn’t her phone—it was mine.  I was mortified by my lack of professionalism at that moment.”

OWEN & ADRIENNE GILL

Madly in love, Adrienne and Owen’s public displays of affection can be a minor source of embarrassment for their children Evan, Madison, and Colton. This power couple is just as passionate about their businesses. As the brokers and owners of JPAR Gulf Coast and Team Leaders of Gill Realty Group Real Estate, the Gills love selling real estate across the Alabama Gulf Coast almost as much as they love each other.

Owen shares, “People are the most interesting part of real estate. We’re their biggest advocates and advisors for one of the biggest purchases or sales of their lives. With that comes lots of emotions.” Adrienne jokes, “You get to know people more intimately than any other business—except maybe gynecology!”

With their empire growing, the Gills are all about giving back. “Our hearts are with the youth of this community. I love to mentor and teach entrepreneurial and leadership skills. I often speak at schools and I’m launching Earn to Learn, a program that allows graduating high school seniors to get their real estate license while earning money through a mentorship and internship platform,” Owen tells us.

As for Adrienne? “My heart is with empowering young women, so I’m launching EmpowHER, a program where women in leadership mentor younger generations in our community,” she says, adding, “With a ‘heels on the ground’ approach, we’ll ensure young ladies understand their importance and opportunities within the entrepreneurial world.”

Asked about a humbling moment, Owen immediately replies,Definitely the first few weeks of military boot camp! I went on to serve for 12 years active duty in the US Army and the Alabama National Guard.” Adrienne recalls being a tomboy, sharing, “I was raised to hunt, fish, work on cars, and drive a boat! My favorite memories are shrimping with my dad and long drives to our hunting camp.” As for the future? Having built their business from the ground up, these high school sweethearts plan to spend the rest of their lives traveling together.

Dedicated parents, Adrienne gushes, “We want our kids to experience different cultures; it’s what feeds their adventures! While we’re still very involved in their lives, they’re mostly grown. Now, we’re about each other. If you ask anyone, they’ll tell you they wish they had the same!”

Adrienne’s phobias? “Heights, dark water, and flying cockroaches!”.

Owen’s first celebrity crush? “Alicia Silverstone, hands down.”

AUBREY BRUNER

Positively vibrating with energy, Aubrey spends her time between Mobile, Destin, and New Orleans, as she’s embarked on a new career as a personal shopper and stylist after working in real estate. With her fearless attitude toward fashion, she’s found her calling. “I’m finally doing what I’m truly passionate about. I truly enjoy coming across vintage finds like Chanel, Dior, and Versace,” she says. Her career dovetails nicely with how she expresses herself. “My personality definitely comes out in my fashion. I’m playful and eccentric, so I love showcasing that in different looks no matter what the occasion—I’m going to show up to your funeral dressed like Liberace, no doubt,” she laughs. Did we mention she’s hilarious?

Citing her mother, Wanda Bruner, as her inspiration, Aubrey shares, “My mother is the strongest woman I know and I never want to disappoint her.” Their shared sense of humor is obvious as Aubrey answers a later question about the most daring thing she’s ever done. “I swam with sharks in the Bahamas. My mother signed me up—clearly she was trying to get rid of me,” she jokes. She’s passionate about animals and vulnerable children and volunteers and donates to many shelters and rescue organizations. Stepping out of her comfort zone is what makes Aubrey special. “I love to travel, attend all kinds of music festivals, CrossFit competitions, experience different cultures, and try every kind of food,” she says.

Aubrey is able to laugh at herself. Asked about phobias, she says, “Roaches! Recently, I was having dinner with my fiancé  and made the stupid decision to sit outside. Of course this demon with wings decided to fly right over to join us—I mean murder me—so I had to get out, which meant flipping back by chair and going into full stop, drop, and roll mode. It looked like I was fighting off a ghost attack—wine and food were flying everywhere. I can never show my face there again. I also need therapy.” We commend Aubrey for her courage in the face of aggressive roaches and also for her zest for life.

Desert island must-haves? “A toothbrush, a gun, and a lighter. No way would I have the patience to make a fire with rocks and sticks.”

First celebrity crush? “Chuck Norris, specifically “Walker, Texas Ranger”—he had a horse and killer boots!”

TYLER SAYERS

One of Mobile’s most charming and inventive mixologists, Tyler is more than the Manager at POST Crafted Cocktails & Wine Bar, he’s a gentleman of many talents, and passionate about all of them. Claiming his customers are the primary reason he loves his job, Tyler adds, “Some of my customers have become close friends.” Another upside? “The opportunity to create fun and exciting cocktails, honestly the most interesting part of my job. In order to create a new drink, I have to experiment, and some aren’t winners, but when you find that perfect recipe, it just feels right.” We nod in agreement, sipping our Pom-garitas from the spring menu.

Giving back to his community comes naturally. He’s involved in the Movember Foundation, with his POST team ranking on the top 10 list nationally for the charity focused on men’s mental health and suicide prevention. “This hits home with me due to losing close family, so I help raise awareness and remind people to let their loved ones know they’re not alone,” he shares. POST also participates in Pink October with the American Red Cross, where a portion of their proceeds is donated for breast cancer research.

Expressing his personality in many ways, he tells us, “I love all types of music and I’m usually the one who plays it at the bar because I can read the crowd.” Another? “I’m a storyteller. I have an almost photographic memory, so I can recall any trip or event I go to.” Hobbies? “You can find me on the golf course dressed like a pro and playing like an amateur. I enjoy being on the boat fishing and created an outdoor lifestyle brand called Take It Easy Adventures, allowing me to spend time outdoors.”

Tyler names his friend and boss Matthew LeMond as someone who inspires him. “He pushes me to be better and shoot for the stars. I’ve learned so much from him in the past eight years. He let take the reins at POST, changing my life for the better. He’s the reason I can create these amazing cocktails and host events. Without him, none of this would be possible.” On that note, we raise a glass to Tyler. Cheers!

Your family’s favorite story about you? “That I was the Drum Major in high school who rapped “Ice Ice Baby” during the halftime shows and at band competitions. They love showing people the videos!”

Something you were so wrong about? “Going to college to be a physical therapist.”

BAILEY & SHELBY CULBERTSON

Obviously beautiful on the outside, this sweet couple is also beautiful on the inside. A realtor at Keller Williams Alabama Gulf Coast Realty in Orange Beach, Shelby’s career is about communication, finding perfect properties, and creating friendships throughout the buying and selling process. A creative force, Bailey is the founder of Future Astronaut Co., known for creating unforgettable events for the cool crowd. From securing the best DJs (Bailey is one, too!), to creating interactive and cutting-edge lighting and artistic big-screen thrillers, Bailey explains, “We’re usually the team behind the scenes at everyone’s favorite concerts and events. I love helping people enjoy the time they’ve created for themselves amongst a busy schedule.”

In her downtime, Shelby’s a photography enthusiast, sharing, “I love capturing the essence of a special moment I can look back on and share with other people. I’m also a plant woman and have over 50 indoor and outdoor plants. With hopes to create an even bigger botanical oasis, caring for my plants and cooking plant-based meals fills my heart!”

On the giving back front, it’s Baldwin County’s Safe Harbor Animal Coalition for Shelby. Why? “They help reduce cat colonies by providing trap and release services to spay or neuter and then release the cats where they picked them up. They’ve helped me with six cats in total.” For Bailey? Each December we partner with Gulf Coast Kids House to help support local kids who absolutely deserve it and more. Be on the lookout for how you can get involved this year!” he adds.

Listing height inquiries as common, Bailey jokes, “I’m 6’8” and always asked if I play basketball, but I’m never asked if I’m any good at it—the answer is no!” A music and conversation enthusiast, Bailey’s favorite memories are from travels with Shelby. On an interesting note, Shelby adds connecting with her father for the first time in 2019 as a cherished memory. “He lives in Kuwait and we see each other twice a year now. It’s everything I’ve ever wished for!” she exclaims. Bailey adds, “My family spoke positive words to me even when teaching me something or correcting me while I was growing up. Those words of encouragement at a young age helped me to not count myself out of big dreams and still inspire me today. Shelby carries that same energy and we love helping each other reach new limits.”

Karaoke picks? Shelby: “Probably something by Florence & The Machine. My heart would pour out over the microphone, even though I do not partake in karaoke!”

Bailey: “’Move on Up’ by Curtis Mayfield.”

First celebrity crush? Shelby: “Megan Fox!” Bailey: “Angelina Jolie!”

DAWN FRANKLIN

It’s not often we meet real-world globetrotters, but regardless of the myriad countries we ask if she’s visited, Dawn’s answer is always yes—she spent her long and rewarding career in the skies as an International Flight Attendant.

“After retiring, I decided it was time to pursue my dream of owning a small business. My favorite pastime is to be at the beach. After Hurricane Sally, I collected so many shells,” she laughs, adding, “When I brought them home, my daughter Rebecca suggested I make them into candles! I loved the idea and after much experimenting and research, I created Fire Shells Candles.” Selling her hand-poured and decorated wares via Instagram and Etsy (@Fire_Shells) has allowed her to enjoy her time on the beach while also adding to her inventory. The best part? “Watching my dog, Henry, a White West Highland Terrier, looking for shells by digging in the sand!”

Alongside her husband Buddy for 25 years, she has two daughters, Access’s own Rebecca Foose and Lizelle Foose, both of whom inspire her. “I’ll always be their Mama, no matter how old they are! she exclaims. Another motivating source in her life is her philanthropy, as she notes, “I’m committed to supporting Heifer International, an organization supplying children in third-world countries with food and livestock.”

Self-expression comes naturally for Dawn. “I love to garden, and am learning what grows here through trial and error. I’m still a world traveler; I love going to off-the-beaten-path locations domestically and internationally,” she says.

Stating she feels most beautiful “when I’m going for a night out with my husband,” she further claims, “Jesse’s Restaurant in Magnolia Springs is our favorite spot for date night.” Loved ones describe her as “fun, easy-going, and always up for an adventure,” but underneath her lighthearted approach to life is a work ethic influenced by her childhood. “I grew up on a beef cattle farm in Pennsylvania, which taught me the value of hard work,” she says. In our eyes, it appears she’s earned her day in the sun.

Go-to karaoke song? “I would never do karaoke! However, if I chose a song for someone else, it would be Adele’s ‘Set Fire To The Rain’—good luck to them!”

Most daring thing you’ve done? “Sailed through 16-foot waves in the West Indies on a 38-foot sailboat!”

JENNI GARCIA

Defining beauty as “any expressive form that life takes,” we already adore Jenni for her unique perspective. A stylist extraordinaire at ColoréVous Salon Co. in Fairhope, she says, “My favorite part of the job is getting to meet so many different people. I love hearing about the lives of people who live here and also from people traveling through!”

Married to Lewis Carter III, an attorney specializing in Veterans Affairs at the law firm Gardberg & Kemmerly, Jenni explains that he helps struggling veterans to get their benefits, telling us, “It’s a wonderful company and we are both so proud to have him work there.”

She began developing a company in 2017, and though it’s been a long process, she’s excited to announce the launch of Trusting Hope in July 2022. “Trusting Hope is dedicated to helping people suffering with anxiety and anxiety-related disorders by sharing their stories to help others. You’ll be able to find us on our website, TrustingHope.help and you’ll also be able to donate to Trusting Hope or our story-givers directly.” Her hope is that in doing this work she will reach people who need help. “Mental health is an important part of daily life and being aware of your own and considerate of others is a beautiful expression of communal care.”

Loved ones describe Jenni as “sweet, quirky, talented, and a bit nerdy. I love deeply and I’m flighty! The flightiness helps me to think outside the box, which is where I am most of the time,” she laughs. But she also has a daredevil side. “'I’d love for people to call me if they have a wild hair to go rock climbing, skydiving, or swimming with sharks; I love experiencing nature in extremes as well as enjoying our beautiful beaches with my toes in the sand,” she claims. Jenni feels beautiful when she’s with Lewis, saying, “When he looks at me (with no makeup on and messy hair) in the way that he does, silently telling me I’m beautiful, I feel seen. I feel confident, too, but mostly I feel completely loved.”

First celebrity crush? Noah Hathaway! He played Atreyu in ‘The NeverEnding Story.’ My 6-year-old heart exploded when he tried to rescue his horse from the swamp of sorrows.”

Most daring things you’ve ever done? “Rappelling down waterfalls in Costa Rica and doing a backflip on my  first bungee jump!”

JASON CHAMBERS

Born and raised in southwest Louisiana, hair stylist extraordinaire and Access fave Jason was a bit shocked when asked to jump from behind the scenes to in front of the camera. “Having the lens turned on me made me realize how hard it is to be in the spotlight! But being the change I want to see is how I want to live my life, so I went all in,” he admits.

The owner of HeadDress Salon in Midtown Mobile, Jason is no stranger to being center stage, as the premier hairstylist to countless debutantes, brides, and more. Often considered a family member by his clients, he shares, “I absolutely love going through life’s milestones with my clients. From proms and graduations to debuts and weddings, it’s so rewarding to make others feel beautiful. When I make someone feel good, I feel beautiful, too.”

A fan of Mardi Gras and all the traditions that take place from November’s Camelia Ball to Fat Tuesday, Jason is a go-to stylist for local royals. Why? No one can create an elegant, long-lasting up-do quite like him (or as fast). “I absolutely love caring for the girls! While the revelry is hectic, it’s so much fun and very fulfilling to share these life-defining moments with such wonderful people,” he beams.

A proud Member of the Order of Osiris since 2009, Jason was an Emblem in 2013 and Monarch in 2019. “For the longest time, we weren’t able to express our individuality and the ball gives us one amazing night to do so. We’re a beacon of hope and I cherish being able to express myself with friends and our community,” Jason explains.

Raised on a rice farm, Jason found his calling as he watched his cousins prepare for pageants. From there, he was self-taught and the rest is hair-history. But he learned a lot more on that farm and is quick to joke that he can skin a buck in 6-inch heels!

As for outside of work? “I have a wonderful, supportive group of friends who inspire me through their kindness and humor. They make what could be a black-and-white life extremely colorful through their appreciation of art, music, and dance. They’re the breath of life!” he concludes.

Something people don’t know? “I’m an excellent trombone player.”

First celebrity crush? “Bo and Luke from ‘The Dukes of Hazzard!’”

LAUREN GREENLEE DREHER

Truly big personality personified, Lauren appears larger than life. Accomplished, smart, kind, and generous, she owns Precision Dance Academy & Company and is both a director and coach for Team USA for the American Dance Company. “I travel the country doing master classes and choreography for other companies and I’m head judge for several National Dance Competitions,” she says. The best part of her job? “Being a part of children’s lives and seeing a dancer’s progress—even better is seeing them proud of themselves.”

Lauren’s enthusiasm for life began early, she tells us. “I was a spitfire! My family jokes that I came into this world like ‘Tada! Here I am!’ and I’ve lived my life that way.” Her professional modeling career began when she was 15, and she’s walked for many designers, been featured in magazines, and starred in commercials, as well.

Focusing on her faith and family is paramount. “My faith is one of my most prized possessions and I give Him all of the glory for all the ways He has blessed my family,” she shares, adding, “I’m also thankful for my mother and my sisters; the true respect, selflessness, and loving spirit my parents shared shaped every detail of who I am.” Lauren lost her father, Grandmaster Larry Dreher, two years ago to Alzheimer’s. She says, “He was my role model and owned karate dojos throughout Mississippi.
All of his grown students tell me I’m just like him—strict with high expectations for quality and technique, but also encouraging and letting my students know I’m their biggest fan.”

On a lighter note, we asked Lauren’s three desert island must-haves. “Snacks because I love to eat, my Goldendoodle Henry, and coloring books and glitter gel pens.” Karaoke song? She laughs, saying, “Well, in the shower I sound just like Celine Dion.” What she was wrong about? “I never believed people who said your metabolism slows as you get older. I used to eat a whole pizza and I was fine. Now? Not so much.”

Most daring thing you’ve done? “Wearing a Care Bear onesie and jumping in the neighbor’s pool behind the beach house we rented. No one thought I would in 30-degree weather!”

First celebrity crush? “Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Macaulay Culkin! I was convinced every limo I saw was them coming to see me.”

JAMES WEAVER

Meeting James, you’d never know this completely warm and friendly man used to consider himself socially awkward. He explains, “Ever since I’ve turned 30, my outlook has changed. I feel I have a very outgoing personality.” And while it’s always a good thing to look at yourself more positively, for James,  it’s more than that. As co-owner of The Midtown Pub, being sociable is in the job description. With their tagline being “It’s our pleasure to make you feel at home,” James and the staff do just that, welcoming everyone with a smile.

With his partner Beau Guidry and their sweet puppy Cooper, James is content these days. How would loved ones describe him? “I feel they’d describe my personality as very thoughtful and caring. I tend to go out of my way for the people I’m closest to and try to make them feel appreciated and loved. If anyone has ever met my mother, they understand why I am that way,” he laughs.

A native of Mount Vernon, he and Beau spend their free time traveling. James tells us, “Seeing different parts of the world changes you. We recently took the plane down to the Bahamas for a week. It wasn’t until we arrived that we realized how much we actually needed to get away for a bit and just unplug. Nothing makes me happier than sitting on a beach with a drink in my hand.”

Unafraid to laugh at himself, James divulges, ”I have a severe hatred of spiders. Once, when I was in a drive-thru picking up donuts before work, the employee in the window suddenly pointed at my window, where there was this huge banana spider sliding down its web right over my  shoulder. Needless to say, I frantically exited the car through the passenger door and was ready to let the spider have the donuts and the vehicle. If it weren’t for the long line of people behind me watching, I don’t think I would’ve actually been able to go back and kill that thing.” We’re laughing, but admit we’d do exactly the same.

Go-to karaoke song? “The very few times I’ve ‘disgraced the mike ‘ was after a few drinks, trying to rap ‘The Real Slim Shady.’ That’s all I’ll say on this painful matter.”

First celebrity crush? “Oddly enough, the first celebrity crush I can remember was Topanga from Boy Meets World.
